the imic sucks, plain and simple. I've tried to put some guitar on a track in some audio program or other using my korg pxr4 out to the imic and it was almost 2 full seconds behind. latency in the imic is a huge problem on my ibook.
The latency problem has nothing to do with the iMic, and everything to do with the fact that you are mixing the signal in software before sending back out. This illustrates another reason to favour firewire... since it's 33 times faster, there's 33 times less inherent latency in the hardware. Still, if you are monitoring a software mix, there will always be some latency. (That's another cool thing about the MOTU deck... you can set up a bunch of on-board mixes between the inputs and outputs, and monitor with zero latency.)
the link is to their usb pre which i've seen as low as $179 on the web would be as much as getting multiple imics and i'd assume lightyears beyond in audio quality.
Well, the MobilePre (from your link) does look like it's got some more facility than the imic... but then, it also costs several times more. It might be a decent option if you want to stick with USB though. -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca
