Thank you all for your ideas on this issue. I have taken a mélange of all suggestions and you can critique it in the next build. :) (I've for now settled on a pair of earphones in the style Mike provided, with one earpiece greyed out, along with an 'M' in the middle. However, for now the imagery is staying mostly constant but with the "pushed-in" appearance. Also the tooltip describes the current state. This seemed a reasonable compromise to mitigate potential confusion.) -ben On 24 8 2004 at 5:24 am -0400, Carl Edlund Anderson wrote:

Suppose the point was just drive that little bit further home by having a little "M" appear between the headphones when one was greyed out for mono, and a little "S" when both were black for stereo?
I understand the confusion becomes the question "does that show what's selected, or does it show what I'm switching to?" Perhaps a tool tip could clear it up. Believe it or not, I'm still finding tool tips useful in DB.
At the risk of saying "me, too": me too! As a compliment to the icon
