Yeah I guess so. Except that the built-in AD's are noisy and low- resolution. And I'm not sure how much gain they provide; in fact, I'm almost positive that on all new macs, they expect a line-level signal. This is at least true of my current MDD G4 (Dec 2002 vintage).
I have recorded direct from guitar level to my PowerBook G4 audio input. I also recently bought a Tascam US-122 two input USB digital interface... cheap (about $200), works well. Well, it did work well until Audacity broken with Panther. Still waiting on a fix for that... or GarageBand, whichever comes first. Pat
