You can make and assign your own icons for given dbkits in any case (and depending on the the kind of kit, and the person making it, the look and feel of the icons tend to vary a fair bit!).
Another refinement could be that if two sounds share the same position on the staff, then that position would be monophonic-- i.e. the closed high-hat would interupt the open-high-hat.
This, too, is user configurable within the kit editor. You can specify a given "drum type" (e.g. "hi-hat") and "variant" (e.g. "open" and "closed") for the appropriate samples, and specify that "variants" of the same "type" interupt each other.
A check box could be added to allow things like ride-cymbals to keep ringing.
