songs with the ns kit

hi, I want to record a drumkit for doggiebox. any tips? I just wanted to go out and record the kit of a friend. The user's guide mentions a sample rate of 44,1 Khz. does the bitrate matters? I added two new songs. #8 is done with the nskit(woodb.): great drum. comment is welcome. Although the nskit was created with samples, at some point in time those samples were captured or recorded in the same way that you are planning to do. I would not go with less than 16 bit files. I use 32 bit float export when coming "out" of Doggiebox, but the original samples are 16 bit. As with any recording project, take the time to setup the rig for optimum results. Use good mic's, even if you have to rent or borrow them. On Mon, 29 Dec 2003 02:14:57 +0100 "mlucas1" <thirdson@pi.be> wrote:

Speaking of ns_kit, I got a reply from Douglas awhile ago and it's looking like we may well be able to do up an "official" Doggiebox ns_kit! It's mainlly an issue of how to package and distribute the kit so that it reasonably stands on its own and does not appear as a "gimmick" to sell Doggiebox. I've since replied and am still waiting to hear back from him.

I was going to say what's the point in exporting 32-bit if the source is 16, but of course since the internal mixing is all happening in 32, you probably are preserving more quality that way. I've been exporting in 16, then importing into Audiodesk which converts it up to 24. During the final mixdown it goes back to 16. I hadn't really thought it through but I suppose there's a bit of room for unnecessarily stripping quality off the drums this way. -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

I think this is trickier than it sounds. How can an ns_kit.dbkit file "stand on it's own". I don't think it can since you can't use it without Doggiebox. They're intimately linked. I'm sure there's a solution, but it's not really obvious.

I export as 32 bit float since that's the default working format with Cubase. Why not keep it the same? If I don't, Cubase goes out of it's way to "convert" the bit rate.

True enough. I think it's more of a semantic issue; Douglas doesn't want it to appear that I am profiting from his work by trumpeting ns_kit as the reason to buy Doggiebox. That's fair enough.

Good point, and I would probably find the same hassle avoided with Audiodesk if I export to 24. I'll try that next time. -b -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

I suppose you mean the bit depth (16, 32 bit, etc). No it doesn't matter; Doggiebox will convert on the fly (internally everything is converted to 32-bit floats when loaded and all processing is donet hat way).

Sounds cool... nice groove. Happy new year, all. -b -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca
