Hey folks, Things not looking so good for an "official" Doggiebox version of ns_kit... on the other hand, I can't see what might prevent a third party from making it available somewhere. I'm going to e-mail Douglas back and see if I can challenge his interpretation though (since Doggiebox is usable in its unregistered form, and the kit library is free for anyone to download from). -ben ---------------- Begin Forwarded Message ---------------- Subject: Re: Re: ns_kit for Doggiebox Date Sent: Monday, 15 September 2003 2:52 pm From: Natural Studio (Douglas Whates) <info@naturalstudio.co.uk> To: Ben Kennedy <ben@zygoat.ca> Hi Ben, I was just checking out your site and noticed that doggiebox isn't free. I somehow just presumed it was. It does look like a great product, but I'd have to say no to allowing you to freely allowing you to distribute a DB version of nskit from your site. Sorry! Douglas. ----------------- End Forwarded Message ----------------- -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

If nothing else works out, I would be willing to host an "unofficial" (and freely available) version of an ns_kit on my web site, if someone had an unofficial version to put there (I downloaded the ns_kit WAVs but haven't taken the step of tweaking them for use in Doggiebox). Since the tone of my last message could be misconstrued, I should point out that I don't wish to disrespect Douglas's copyright on his work. In fact, I realised that the copyright notice on his site expressly requests that one not redistribute the samples without his permission. I've e-mailed him again though with a few further ideas, so we'll see what he says. (As I pointed out, anybody can go and build their own Doggiebox ns_kit using the samples downloaded from his site anyway.) -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

Ah, well, I wouldn't want to violate his copyright, to be sure! I fully understand and agree with the GPLish nature of his distribution terms, his desire to see what he provides for free to keep being provided for free. (And I see, now looking closely, that he doesn't want things distributed from other web sites with permission). Clearly, in any case, I could not go around selling copies of my music made with ns_kit (though the small amount of music I've ever recorded as all be freely available anyway, and since I don't expert to ever make any money as a musician, I don't expect to do differently in the future!). And I can see there would be a clear argument against "bundling" his samples with Doggiebox (since Doggiebox shareware rather than freeware), though I am a little confused as to why a Doggiebox drumkit format version of the samples would be problem for him. After all, the ns_kit site _itself_ includes ready-made versions of the ns_kit samples for use with GigaStudio, which was not free the last time I looked (about 30 seconds ago :) A Doggiebox drumkit version would surely be little different?
