OFFish: Flowchart (Slight Return)
Yes Flowchart is a favourite of mine too. Great bass sound too - rrrreally chunky - early McCartney style and cool wah wah sound to the solo too. did i mention great lyrics. Mikes other stuff is pretty good and getting better too by my reckoning - Flowchart is the best to date and is on my sub-ipod mp3 player. Heh, whilst letting the ol' iPod randomize its way through the day, MC's "Flowchart" chart, with its Doggiebox drums (LudwigII kit, no?), popped up. Until I remembered it was done by Mike, I didn't pick up anything to tell me "homemade", nor "drum machine" for that matter. Passes the casual listening test :)
Cheers, Carl

Hi,
that's exactly what came to my mind when I first heard "Flowchart". Sounds perfect to me. Even better than "come alive". I think it has something to do with the drum set that he used, I love the boomy stuff from the Ludwig kit.
Regards Thorsten
I don't know what prompted this string of compliments, but thanks to all. The bass sound is coming from my 62 Reissue Fender Jazz. I may have used a pick, which gives it that "ticky-tack" sound. Like others, I dig the "live" sound of the Ludwig kit. I crave more and better cymbal sounds, though. My kit needs work to balance what's in there right now. The boomy kick can be a challenge to fit into a mix. I have developed a workflow that involves: 1- export from DB 2- open in Peak and apply heavy limiting and some parametric eq to the stereo drum mix. 3- go back for a second pass to add some room reverb 4- insert back into DAW, apply more effects and compression as the mix dictates. This really adds some life and, punchiness to the kit that it otherwise lacks. Adding the reverb at the early stage is optional. I also add room effects to the total mix during what passes for my "mastering" stage. My kids (14, 18, and 20- the older two with some disposable income) just got me an iPod for Fathers day. I plan to collect songs from fellow DB'ers, as well as from other sources, like the users of the Fender Discussion Page's Home Recording Forum. On Jun 24, 2005, at 4:01 PM, Sion Morris wrote:

** Shameless, one time only plug alert ** Nice of your kids Mike. Now you need to get a case for your iPod. I run just such a joint: http://www.maccessorize.com/ Okay, maybe not so shameless, but thanks for looking. :)

I use very similar techniques when creating songs -- demos -- usually. Perhaps I'll put one up somewhere for a listen soon. BTW, Pro Tools LE _finally_ came out for Tiger today if anyone has been waiting for it. On Jun 24, 2005, at 3:39 PM, Michael Carlyle wrote:

Hi Mike Yeah that bass is really good.. Being a bit cheeky this, but I wonder, if it isn't too much hassle, could you record and send me a single note middle c on the bass as you played on Flowchart - I've discovered a way to create or at least modify custom instruments in Garageband and I'd love to have that sampled bass sound in my armory. I've done this successfully with a bass note sampled from a cleaned up old recording and it works really well from just one note. The first track, "Sunny", on my 2005 page at www.cinnamondesign.co.uk/music/music.html was done this way. Anyway if you can that'd be cool :-) On the Ludwig kit, I recall that David was intending to record a V3 kit at some point - so an improved version of the kit could be coming soon. Might be worth emailing him with some requests in case he's about to set it all up. Cheers Sion Morris Liverpool www.cinnamondesign.co.uk/music/music.html -------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, I don't keep meticulous production notes. These songs are like snowlfakes a little bit... every one is different. I will see if I can get something close. Can you share your GB sampling tip? On Jun 25, 2005, at 10:42 AM, Sion Morris wrote:

That'd be great Mike. Thanks. The quick and dirty way I added my own sample was by installing a set of garageband instruments by bitshift (which are free). I downloded them from Limewire but I think you can also get them from the website: http://www.bitshiftaudio.com/products/bbb/free_bee.html Once you've installed these go to library-Application support- Garageband-Instrument Library-Sampler-Sampler files-Bitshift Open one of the aiff audio files in your sound editing software (I use Amadeus) and paste your new sound over the original. Then save (same name). This will now be used whenever you select this instrument in Garageband If you want to change the name as it appeard in the Garageband menu you need to go to to the pst or exs fie by opening it in TextEdit - The technique comes from the web page below, which will give you a better description of how to do this http://www.icompositions.com/news/music_comments.php?id=11_0_1_0_C By the way did you notice that I nicked the first bar of the drums from 'Come Alive' in my song 'Sunny"... see if you can spot it!
