Dear DoggieBoxers; I have used the Demo version of DoggieBox to "play" along with - using it as a glorified drum machine. I have a USB audio box, and an old stereo mixer. Any ideas on how I can get rid of the mixer; ie, I want to internally mix the output of DoggieBox with my Bass plugged directly in to my powerbook. Thanks for any thoughts; John Stewart Ottawa, Canada.

Hi John, Have you looked at Audio Hijack or anything like that? Or any other audio recording tool that will monitor to the speaker in realtime. Just run that in the background so that you get bass through the system, then play doggiebox. Of course unless your bass has active pickups you may well need a pre-amp or DI before going into the computer as well. GarageBand has software amp modelers built in. So any electric guitar that can send a signal should work. http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/accessories.html Note: Requires a Macintosh with a built in analog audio in port <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T9106LL/A> if there is no built in audio port, the Griffin iMic might work as well. <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70302/wo/jbqtDkkTBKxL2Tvgm8j3r4Ov538/1.4.0.5.10.11.0.1?52,29>

Yeah I guess so. Except that the built-in AD's are noisy and low- resolution. And I'm not sure how much gain they provide; in fact, I'm almost positive that on all new macs, they expect a line-level signal. This is at least true of my current MDD G4 (Dec 2002 vintage). I guess GB is not targeted at pros anyhow though. -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

I have recorded direct from guitar level to my PowerBook G4 audio input. I also recently bought a Tascam US-122 two input USB digital interface... cheap (about $200), works well. Well, it did work well until Audacity broken with Panther. Still waiting on a fix for that... or GarageBand, whichever comes first. Pat

I've been successful with an inexpensive Behringer Eurorack; it handles balanced or unbalanced input, and I output from its Main Mix into the line-in of my g4. I do vocals this way as well. My ears don't notice the lower resolution.

Has anyone tried on of these iMics? Maybe I am using bad microphones (two different ones) but I can't get a decent recording. My PowerBook's built in mic give me a stronger signal than the iMic. I'd love to hear other's experiences with the iMic. B

I've had crappy experiences with my iMic lately. Well, I haven't really used it since I got my 828mk2, but it had always been hit-and-miss. I think there's something wrong with USB audio drivers under 10.2 and later. One thing I *was* using it for lately was recording messages off my voicemail, using a $20 adapter from radioshack. I returned the adapter once and was about to do it again when it seemingly didn't work (loud ground hum noise when I had it connected). I discovered that this hum went away when I recorded to my iBook running on battery. When connected to my G4, or to the iBook plugged into the wall, behaviour was spectacularly awful. Clearly some kind of electrical issue that the iMic did not isolate. -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca
