SV: Re: recording software? (was Re: [Doggiebox] a couple of recent observations)
I`ve used Digital Performer the past 2 years, any I`ve found it to be fairly buggy. I swithched to Logic a couple of months ago, and it`s soooo much better as far as reliability goes. On a usability level, I`d have to say that DP is *quite* OK, one u get used to it, but it has a rather steep learing curve. Logic is somewhat more intuitive, but it has too many pre-sets for my taste. It does give you a bunch of preset sounds for different instruments, so its basically just plug, play and record. One downside to Logic is that its really, really pricey, and u cant use VST plugins. One biig benefit is that it will most likely work flawlessly with any hardware. Altleast it did for me. I also kinda like the tight integration with iTunes for easy exports and so forth.. Logic will also most likely cover any future needs u might have. it really is quite a package. I tried Deck, but didnt really get into it, I though DP was better for me at the time. I also use Peak a lot for basic editing of tracks. Its really quick and easy to use for the basic stuff. BTW, for people recording direct to their Macs, what software do you
use? I've heard good things about MotU Digital Performer, though it

I'm still using my trusty old Roland VS-1680, but _someday_ when I've

For what it's worth, I use Digital Performer pretty much exclusively and I'm a big fan. I learned the whole "software recording" thing with Deck, years ago, and that was a nice foray into the world of digital recording. Simple and very straightforward. Since I'm a Mac user, I went the DP route rather than the ProTools route. I've always felt that the DP interface is much more user friendly and personally, the MIDI capabilities, I feel, are much better in DP. And DP in OSX has addressed many of the previous limitations (not able to use some 3rd party plugins, etc.) I think if you have a fast enough computer with enough memory, you can't go wrong with DP. Pretty much everyone I know uses different recording software, though. I usually find that whatever someone learns on, that's what they stick with. Don't know if that helps, but I was feeling "chatty." chocky -----Original Message----- From: doggiebox-bounces@lists.zygoat.ca [mailto:doggiebox-bounces@lists.zygoat.ca] On Behalf Of Tor Lillegraven Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 7:48 AM To: thorsten.kummer@gmx.de; doggiebox@lists.zygoat.ca Subject: SV: Re: recording software? I switched from Deck to Logic about two weeks ago and haven't looked back. Deck is OK from a GUI perspective, but there are several bugs that affect layout (poor design and mostly a non-aqua L&F) and playback (like clicking play before selecting the audio device will cause a crash) that Bias has not fixed (or they can't reproduce). Also, you will be limited to 16-bit, 48 khz recording, Deck doesn't support anything higher. I quickly ran out of tracks on Deck LE (only allows 12) and so had to upgrade to regular Deck, which at ~$300 is the same price as Logic. IMO, the plug-ins don't sound as good as Logic, there is no MIDI instrument composing (useful to add some background strings) and it just doesn't 'feel' as good as Logic on my PowerBook. Let's just say I used Deck for 2+ years to record a lot of my songs. Now after using Logic for two weeks, I want to go back and re-record everything I ever wrote. Cheers, Christoph
