With the purchase of a Tascam 2488 MKII on the horizon, I'm starting to get some drum tracks in order. I'll still program drums on the Mac, then dump an exported audio file into the 2488. I'll probably program a scratch track just to make sure the timing works, then go back and polish up the drum tracks as a last step.
So... I've been noticing that the Yamaha kit has some really nice sounds. The NS Kit that I've spent so much time putting together sounds small and compressed by comparison. I like the variety I've put into the NS Kit, but now I'm not sure I like the sounds.
Has anyone else noticed this? I can't remember wether the original NS Kit sounds were like this, or if I manipulated them in some misguided way.

I don't remember, but you might have. The ns_kit samples are pretty much totally dry -- no compression or 'verb anything on it that I know of. So it can sound kind of strange next to the drum sounds we're used to hearing on record. Also, it sounds "a certain way", as will all samples, and that certain way will appeal to us as individuals more or less at different times and in different circumstances. So you may simply be digging the Yamaha more, too :)
There seem to be an increasing number of ways to get drum hit samples at multiple velocities for not _too_ much money; quite a lot of the relatively affordable drum loop packages from Betamonkey or even the slightly more pricey Drums on Demand loops include multi-velocity samples (if not necessarily at the sometimes insane level of detail that ns_kit goes to). I reckon I could put together several more kits in the style of ns_kit using such samples that I've culled from my handful of loop CDs, but I've been kind of hanging out to see what any prospective work on DB2 brings to make using multi-velocity dbkits slightly less harrowing :)

The Yammaha is my kit of choice at the moment. I'd say that although its probably got the minimum sounds for a useful kit, they really work well together especially the snare sounds. I can get quite a natural sound very easily with it and its good for acoustic and heavy songs. The one drawback is that there is only one satisfying cymbal crash but I might see if I can generate another by lowering the pitch of the sample and changing the pan setting...
Not such a fan of the nskit despite the variety of velocities and samples. its a bit too clean and 'studio for me. My other favourite is the Ludwig kit but I'm tending to use the Yamaha more now.
There's a few songs I've done with the kit on my site www.sionsmusic.cinnamondesign.co.uk

The only problem with the Yamaha kit is the limited number of hi-hat timbres. I like the variety in the NS kit, but I agree that the actual drum sounds now sound a bit too clean to me in hindsight.
I am certain that I can process some life back into them, using something like Room Machine, but... extra work. Not really my bag at the moment.
I also like the David Holloway Ludwig kits, but they're almost a bit TOO live for me.
