Cool, I appreciate the feedback Richard! (Since this did not seem to make it to the list, I'm CCing this reply) I ended up deciding to go with the MOTU for now. Some reasons: - cost is cheaper by 50% - bundled software may suit me, if not, i can upgrade to full DP4 for a couple hundred bucks - more onboard mix capabilities - level meters on front of the unit I've got zero experience with midi and probably won't be doing any such recording for awhile (my main interest is recording actual instruments performed by humans) but it's cool to know that DP is good in that regard. My sense was also that while ProTools is the "de facto standard" in the industry, they are similarly limited to not changing their software much for fear of inconveniencing seasoned users (see Macworld review in the recent June issue I think). Thus I can hope that MOTU's software might be more innovative in some regards. Oh yes, another factor was that unlike ProTools, if I were to upgrade to DP4 I would then be able to take sessions on the road with me and mix from my powerbook without having to lug around the 19" hardware dongle. Anyway, I ordered the unit a day or two ago and it is supposedly somewhere in a UPS truck en route to me now, so I will post again with my impressions once I've played with it some. :) -ben On 11 9 2003 at 12:00 pm -0400, richard hunt wrote:

I have owned both brands - Digi 001 and a Motu DP3 w/ 24i
I like both differently - The beauty of ProTools is that the software always runs. It will not let you add more effects that it can play. The system never crashed and worked.
I recently traded a mic for a MOTU 24i and didn't think much of the system until I tracked a live session. AWESOME. 13 tracks live for 180 minutes - 0 problems... I then started working with the midi software much better than the ProTools. It integrates with Unity and Reason like they are part of the system...
If you are working a studio where you rent the room to clients I would purchase the Digidesign simply for the marketing aspect alone. It probably does a better job of the actual recording process...
If you are working on your own work and using Midi the Motu offers more features and functionality that ProTools out of the box. The mastering software included is very good.
Richard
PS - We are experimenting with Digidesign TDM and Motu hardware as a live mixing console. We have been very successful with both systems under differing test. The best we have accomplished is live 48 tracks with over 100 effects - mixing live and recording at the same time....

Hey all,
I am on the verge of dropping a bunch of clams on either a MOTU 828mkII or a Digidesign 002 Rack system. Does anybody have any particular feedback or preferences regarding ProTools vs. Digital Performer?
(As an aside, I know that DP4 supports AudioUnit plug-ins... but does ProTools LE?)
Getting this system set up will not only give me better tools with which to record and mix my own stuff, but should be a precursor to support for better external integration with Doggiebox for such apps...)
