Hi all, I figured it's about time to let you get your hands on what will become the next release of Doggiebox. Things are still evolving, but a bunch of the under-the-hood reworking which was holding things up is now at the point where things are usable again. Here are the notes: • Mac OS X 10.2.x is now required, and 10.3.x is recommended. • The file format for both .dbsong and .dbkit has changed since 1.0.x. Files saved in this and later versions of Doggiebox will NOT be usable by Doggiebox 1.0.x. (However, the new file format has been devised to afford greater backward-compatibility from this point on.) • A much-awaited, new and improved section-and-layout song structuring model makes its debut. Hopefully its behaviour is (or will become) fairly self-explanatory, so no extensive notes are provided this time around. See if you can figure it out, and please provide feedback. • The song editor window has been redesigned for better usability: a) the drum kit drawer has been moved into the main window and is much larger; b) the song name, details and kit are no longer accessed via a separate dialog sheet. • There are some minor bugs and incomplete features in this build which will be addressed shortly, including, but probably not limited to: a) inconsistent Undo behaviour for some actions; b) lack of ability to re- arrange song sections by dragging them in the lists. Grab it here: <http://www.doggiebox.com/beta/Doggiebox-1B1.zip> Please report any feedback, including bug reports, usability notes and improvement suggetions, either here to the list or directly to me. Started fooling around with the new Beta. Nice changes. Can't seem select drums, though. I can command-click and get the default drum, but can't seem to click in the editor to add a different drum. Am I missing something? -Drew On Jan 30, 2004, at 3:57 PM, Ben Kennedy wrote:

Nope it's a bug, will be fixed shortly :) On 31 1 2004 at 11:32 pm -0500, Charlie Needle wrote:
I'm a bit lost I must say - I got a few sections but when I press all in the Layout- they weren't in order???
Hmm... did this happen even after you saved/reopened the file? Can you give me some steps to reproduce this? It seems to work properly for me, but there could well be a bug.
Also using apple i to get a new bar needs the section listed to be hi-lighted?? Confusing
Well, the pattern editor needs to have input focus (meaning you have to first either click in or tab to it after creating the new section). I agree that is a bit lame, I'll try to fix that.
I also noticed that the section doesn't show the Bar #'s it uses
What are you referring to -- can you be more specific? Thanks for your feedback so far, both of you! -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

In the layout section, would it be possible to specify a repeat for a section? Say I had a short 2 bar loop I wanted to use 10 times (for 20 bars total). With the current layout, you would need to select the loop section 10 times. It would be a nice touch to be able to say "Use loop section X 10." I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but some way to easily select different version (velocities) of a given drum would be great. If I had a snare with 3 different levels, it would be nice to be able to say "use this drum, at this level" and be able to go back and easily change the level. Just a few more thoughts. Thanks for the great work. -Andrew On Feb 2, 2004, at 1:26 PM, Ben Kennedy wrote:

Okay, you've got it; now implemented for the next build. :)

Yeah. Coming eventually. Still need to figure out the most elegant way to do this; there are two different approaches that I see: 1. create separate sub-variants for such drums, consisting of different samples. This would provide the most realistic effect. Can be currently achieved to some extent by creating new variants for drums, as people have done with ns_kit. 2. simply be able to change the volume with a slider on any given drum hit. This would be fairly easy to implement, and I still probably will if people would find it worthwhile, although the results would not be as realistic as having distinct samples for different velocities. 3. a combination of the above, with a slider type thingy, which would do the former if samples were available or the latter if not, depending on how the particular drum is configured in the kit. -ben -- Ben Kennedy, chief magician zygoat creative technical services 613-228-3392 | 1-866-466-4628 http://www.zygoat.ca

What about being able to option-click (or some other key) a drum that's already been placed in the song editor to bring up a list of variants for that drum. This way, you can program away without worrying about which sample variant was most appropriate in a given spot, then easily go back and modify and refine the pattern or song. I like this option a bunch. Very natural to drop on the snare, say, then go back and right-click (ctl-click for the one-button mouse types) and see the variants for the drum. Seems like this would be a very natural mode. On Feb 2, 2004, at 5:47 PM, Michael Carlyle wrote:

This would be bad ass, however to me the concept of volume is separate from variants: [Drum class] > [Variant] > [Volume] Eg. Snare > Default > 5 Snare > Default > 4 Snare > Default > 3 Snare > Default > 2 Snare > Default > 1 Snare > Rimshot > 5 Snare > Rimshot > 4 Snare > Rimshot > 3 Snare > Rimshot > 2 Snare > Rimshot > 1 Of course if one does not have additional samples at differing volumes this becomes a moot point. Never mind, I'll shut up now :) Cheers, Christoph
