[Doggiebox] red squares

Greetings. I am new to doggiebox. Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the red squares? I downloaded some of the sample files and some of the squares in the pattern editor are filled with a light red color instead of an instrument icon. I am assuming that these notes have less velocity or something, but I don't know. How are they created? What are they? Any help would be appreciated.
