I'm having a curious problem in which if I try to open an old dbsong for which I no longer have a dbkit of the expected name, while Doggiebox gives me the option to choose a new dbkit when it opens the Finder-style window for choosing a new kit, nothing appears -- just the little spinning thing down in the lower lefthand corner. There are certainly kits in the folder, it's just not displaying them, or anything else that might be there. You can use the drop-down location choice menu at the top of the menu to move to other folders, but nothing ever appears and the little spinny thing keeps on spinning! Eventually, if you cancel, you get a message telling you you can't open the dbsong because you have to assign a dbkit.
The workaround is to make a copy of another kit with the same name that as the expected dbkit in the old dbsong. But it would be better if the option to choose a different kit Just Worked! :)
Any ideas?
Cheers, Carl

Hey Carl,
I've noticed this too. I thought it might have been a peculiarity on my particular machine, but it's interesting to know you're having the same issue also. A bunch of that code is fairly old, and I had started to diagnose it and update it with newer routines to fix the problem, but that was work I started a couple of months ago and got back-burnered. Maybe I'll take another look at it. :)
For reference, what version of Mac OS X are you running?

Hi Ben,
I'm running the latest OSX, I think: 10.8.4.
As long as I'm here, I want to throw in a request for some sort of search'n'replace feature. :)

I think more new users may be over on the Facebook page -- mailing lists are so yesterday, ya know! :D But I figured Ben would be more likely to see my bug report via the list, and I'm old enough to still use lists anyway. :)
I've been doing a bit more recording of late; daughter is now old enough to be in pre-school more of the time, and is a bit more independent in the house, so I'm doing more than in the past 3 or 4 years! :D I'm also dusting off old stuff and re-starting it. The dbsong I had the issue with was, besides in need of a new kit, about 9 years old and probably made by a 1.x version of Doggiebox!
I do still keep coming back to DB for my drum programing. The nearest competitor is the slightly more expensive iDrum, I suppose, and after that one would have to look to the rather pricer EZDrummer and then things like BFD or Drumkit From Hell. I might go to those latter things if DB were ever discontinued, but DB still does pretty much everything I need at my level of operations. :)
Not sure it's been updated for about a year, though. Sounds from Ben's description like the "kit replacement bug" is a real thing, though, and not just me. And, meanwhile, the search'n'replace would be pretty sweet. :)
I have in the past posted links of new recordings on which I've used DB drums to the FB page; I think I might have one or two new things since the last time I posted there. I'll have to check, and then post the links! :)
Cheers, Carl

For those not on FB, here's a link to the latest work-in-progress (a cover of cover of "LSD" by Hawkwind) that I've done with DB:
https://soundcloud.com/carledlundanderson/lsd3
This started as a way of testing different bass tones, playing the riff over a very simple loop (also made with DB). I liked it enough that I decided to start expanding it into a full-blown cover with proper drum programing etc.
One of the drum breaks was a bit tricky -- I'm not sure whether it, technically speaking, drifts into 3/4 or something for a few bars. Nevertheless, I kept counting across 4 in my dbsong, just making it come out as I heard it in my head, though it didn't happen over a neat regular pattern in the editor as I would have expected .... Sounds fine, though! :) (IMO!)

I really liked the final result I got with DB on the one tune I was able to complete, but unfortunately had to wipe DB from my Macbook Pro shortly after because it would crash hard every time I was in it, and this became progressively worse such that eventually the only way to regain control of my machine was to hold down the power key and reboot.
The last time even that procedure had to be performed twice, and once I was back in control, the MB Pro would spend enormous amounts of time and resources reindexing all files on the machine just to run any app including opening a finder window. Since this machine serves dual purposes, I could not afford to take any more chances by opening DB, so I removed it.
Prior to removing I asked the guys if there were any known issues with compatibility, OS versions perhaps, or hardware, but none were known. My MBPro is a 2010 model 2.4 Ghz, i5, 8GB, 10.8.4 (currently). Its weird that I'm the only one experiencing these heart-stopping troubles.
I have a new Mac Mini that screams performance, and I use it to do my studio work which includes having a Logic Pro DAW. Even though I can create beats in Logic using my keyboard/pad controller I still would prefer to use DB to create the drum parts, but I still have a bad case of post-traumatic stress from my final efforts to use DB.
In the spirit of " Other than that Ms Lincoln, how was the play?",…….I really did like the program.
Regards,
Rusty White

That IS very weird, and it sounds like some kind of hard disk problem as much as anything. In any case, certainly seems like something "machine level" and not necessarily connected with any of the software on the machine (other than, possibly, something gone funky in the OS itself).

Since this is a different machine, I would be very surprised if it did what your Mac Book was doing. I'm not going to stake my LIFE on it :D but I would be very surprised.
I likewise run a not-quite-so-new Mac Mini, with GarageBand rather than Logic (doing what I do in GB is already crushing my CPU and RAM; I'm tempted to move towards Logic since it's pretty reasonably priced these days, but more creative power in the software is really just going to overtax my already struggling machine even more, I think, so I'll wait till I can upgrade to an iMac), running the latest OSX and running the latest Doggiebox. It's all fine (well, other than the bug described in the original mail!).
I used to use DB to control a Roland VS1680 as an external MIDI slave, though nowadays I've gone all Garageband, and use DB to export multi-track drum parts that I then drag into GB.

Thanks! :) I do have some recordings that just use 3rd-party drum loops of some kind, but I always tend to gravitate back towards DB. It's just fun to use, really. :) And it produces great results. :)
Tweaking volume or panning on the silly number of variant samples in my kits is a bit finicky, though. ;)

I've almost always used a few kits of my own creation (based on one that Mike Carlyle did a long time ago!). And I do sometimes make slight adjustments as I learn more about what (I think) I'm doing. For instance, long ago, I had a lot of far-out panning in the kit, then for a long time I brought everything back to the center; but in the last few weeks I've been experimenting with some subtle panning on some instruments -- mostly toms, cymbals, and hats a little bit. (I keep reading about people who do what seems to me _very_ wide panning of hats -- really? My gut tells me that hats and ride are fairly strong components of the basic rhythm feel, and want to stay close the center with the snare and kick ... but my guts could be wrong, I suppose!)
But for, say, a given cymbal, I have multiple velocities of a straight stick hit, and of grabbed/mute hits, and of mallets ... even in a pretty standard song drum part, I might have 3 or 4 different straight stick hit velocities for a given cymbal. So there's a lot of re-tweaking of the most common 3 or 4 velocities of different parts of the kit as I play with the panning. (It's just too much twiddly work re-panning ALL the, say, 40-odd variants of each instrument, just to check how I like a given setting!) And if I miss one, I'll suddenly hear a hit panned out to +50% or something instead of 25%, and think, "Whoops! Better go back and find that and fix it and audition that part again!"
All that said, I certainly hear people getting great results with the supplied kits. I just like playing around with mine, really. :)
