Hi First off - man, do I love my puppy :-) Doggiebox has become my #1 song arrangement tool. I use it as a drum machine, playing along on my guitar to figure out the internal logic and arrangements of my songs. Once I got everything figured out, I export the drum parts into my sequencer program (Digital Performer), and mix the Doggie tracks down to get a live feel to them. Then I proceed to lay down guitars, vocals and a bassline -- and presto! I have a demo ready to go. # 1 on my wishlist is definitely the abiity to export seperate parts of the drumkit. This would be such a great help to me. The snare needs different effects than the bassdrum, the cymbals need a different panning and some flanger, etc, etc. Implementing this feature would make it a prize-winning puppy for sure. This way I can give the drums that little "human" touch, by intentionally offsetting some snarehits, putting a lot of reverb on the bassdrum, finally getting the open hihat to sound alive... Is there any chance at all, Ben? instrument selection hotkeys

Ben, have you ever considered using keyboard shortcuts to select instruments? For instance, in Adobe products, you can press the letter V to select the Move tool, or M to select Marquee, etc. In Doggiebox, I could see this being very useful for quickly switching between commonly used instruments. B for bass drum, S for snare, H for high hat and so on... perhaps also using a modifier key (IE, shift + hotkey) to cycle through different versions of the same instrument. This might cut down on moving the mouse back and forth to the instrument drawer and the sequencing area to choose different sounds. Has this been suggested before? What are your thoughts? marquee tool discussed?

I have not been able to play to in-depth with the new build, but have you all considered implementing a marquee tool, to allow the selection, duplication and deletion of various elements inside each phrase? This would be great considering I work much with compounded rhythms, and that would increase my productivity, and I think everyone else's as well!

Hi folks, Grab the latest beta at <http://www.doggiebox.com/beta/Doggiebox-1B3.zip> What's new in 1B3 compared with last week's build: New drag and drop functionality: • Can re-arrange the order of sections by dragging them, in both the Section list and Layout list. • Can create new layout markers by dragging sections from the Section list into the Layout list. • Can change an existing marker's section by dragging a section from Section list onto one in the Layout list. Preferences dialog revamped: • Added a new preference for "begin new line at each section", which will create line breaks in the pattern editor for better visual navigation. • Default drum kit picker removed; instead, Doggiebox now automatically defaults to the most recently chosen kit. Miscellaneous changes: • Added support for cut, copy and paste of sections (within and between songs) to the Section list. • Cosmetic improvements to pattern editor. • Revised the scheme for trial mode (limitation is now 30 seconds total duration, instead of 64 bars). • Other minor bugs fixed. Note: Charlie Needle reported that double-clicking the tempo slider, while correctly resetting the tempo to 100%, does not cause the actual slider to move to that position. I can reproduce this under 10.2, but not 10.3. This appears to be an old AppKit issue that I spent some time playing with, but can't find an obvious work-around. Minor though, so it will probably stay. Enjoy! I'm all for a database of drum patterns - I think that's Ben's intention on the DB website, and I'm sure it will grow steadily as there are more users. There's a similar kind of thing happening on the website for my guitar effects pedal: http://www.digitech.com/patchlib/ where users contribute guitar settings. A mix and match approach would be useful for me - maybe having a subsection of 'fills', 'basic beats' even 'drum solos'.. hm... perhraps not on that last one.... Anyway, It would be a good exersise for a drummer who knows his stuff to put together libraries that go together eg a rock library with sub folders contaning variations and fills/flourishes. I know this is done elsewhere with short samples of drum playing variations that you can sequence together to make a track. see: http://www.e-drummer.net///freeloops.html but the beauty of DB is the ability to tinker with it once its in and make it your own and as you say slap in a neat fill just at the right point.. I'd still like the ability to transcribe an actual song's tab. Its just so much more satisfying than a near approximation. Pub guitarist with a beat box vs authentic sound. I wanted to throw in my two cents.... I think that the TAB idea is a great one, but it seems that it might require a whole new approach to interfacing the DB software. And that's fine, (if Ben has time to invent it!). But also I understand, as a guitar player, the desire to play along to certain kinds of drum patterns, or maybe even to an exact drum pattern from a favorite song. Maybe an approach would be to create a database of DB files of specific songs created by users themselves. Generally, I'll create a fairly simple & basic rock drum track that I can play along with. Then after fine-tuning the song, I sometimes wish I had the time and/or patience to create some meaningful fills, or drum transitions, etc., that I could add on top of my basic drum pattern. If there was a bank where someone uploaded their (DB) re-creation, say for example, of Springsteen's "Backstreets" (drums only, of course) -- I would find that invaluable!! I'd download it and play along...or maybe even create my own song with that drum pattern. I realize it's essentially a shared loop library, of sorts, albeit with longer and more specific files, but I think it could really generate some creative movement among the DB community. Hi Mike Yeah - I've had a look at Guitar Tab, which is great for composing or transcribing ascii to chords etc. What I would like to do though is to take a piece of ascii data and transcribe it to a doggiebox db so that I can play guitar along to it or muck about with the patterns. Its just that there are thousands of songs drum tabs already transcribed in ascii and thats likely to continue no matter how popular db gets. In short: I think of a song which I'd like to learn; I find the drum tab on the net; I copy/paste it into doggiebox and play. Then I can play guitar along to an accurate drum track for the song. Hi Ben I've noticed that a lot of tabs use a 16 measure like the following though: |----o-o-----o---| although I grant that it would be a nightmare to create a 'works every time' feature that would work in a general way, due to the variation in time sigs and especially the different instruments tabbed on each line. but... Would it be possible though to program Doggiebox to understand a line pasted such as the example above as a drum hit for every 'o' or 'x' and a gap for every '-' and ignore '|'? Perhaps you could specify these in preferences to take into account the variation. I see it working best by pasting an instrument line at a time - that way you could control which instrument is pasted to in Doggiebox. It opens up some interesting artistic possibilities - pasting one instrument into another's and pasting the same tab into different expansions of doggiebox windows to create new rhythms (or a terrible din) What do you think? feasible? I'm sure even a hit and miss function like this would be a big hit with those of us who have bleeding eyes from manually tabbing :) Second build works for me now. Big improvement. I really love the sections idea. You can achieve this by opening your prefs file (~/Library/Preferences/ca.zygoat.doggiebox.plist) and removing the keys whose names begin with "NSTableView". Or, more simply, just delete the file completely (though doing so will reset all your Doggiebox preferences). New features: • "Number of times" (repeats) paramater added to the Layout table, per popular demand. • Improved experience when adding or removing new sections or markers. • Keyboard shortcuts and menu commands have been added for these functions. • Changes to the master tempo and master level sliders are now Undoable. Other changes: • The Pattern menu has been renamed to Song. • The master tempo slider can now be reset to 100% by double-clicking it. • Various other bug fixes and minor improvements have been made. The drum tracks are separated into distinct tracks, so you also gain pan, volume etc in GarageBand. If you are heading down the midi trail you may have a look at how he is doing this. Add this feature to DoggieBox as well and voila... a drum sequencer for GarageBand. Another great application if I do say so myself. (Plug) Much requested among the GarageBand crowd. My 2 cents. Hi Ben Like the new improvements a lot especially the sections idea - that's just what was needed, although I have the same bug problem of not being able to select any drums yet - can't wait for the next build though! Anyway just wanted to throw in what would be on my wish list in the pot. I'm no developer, so I've no idea how easy or hard it would be, but I would like to be able to import an ascii drum tab file - as is commonly posted on drum tab sites into Doggiebox. It would be a great feature to sell to bedroom guitarists like me who like to cover our favorite songs quickly. imagine thinking of a song you'd like to play, doing a quick search for the guitar and drum tab on the net, importing the tab into DB - you could then . in a matter of minutes set about mastering the song to the exact drum track. That would makelearning a lot easier and speed up the process no end. I imagine in time there would be a large library of Doggiebox dbs, but I also like the idea of poaching bits from here and there to come up with new tracks. 1.1 pre-release (1B1)

Hi all, I figured it's about time to let you get your hands on what will become the next release of Doggiebox. Things are still evolving, but a bunch of the under-the-hood reworking which was holding things up is now at the point where things are usable again. Here are the notes: • Mac OS X 10.2.x is now required, and 10.3.x is recommended. • The file format for both .dbsong and .dbkit has changed since 1.0.x. Files saved in this and later versions of Doggiebox will NOT be usable by Doggiebox 1.0.x. (However, the new file format has been devised to afford greater backward-compatibility from this point on.) • A much-awaited, new and improved section-and-layout song structuring model makes its debut. Hopefully its behaviour is (or will become) fairly self-explanatory, so no extensive notes are provided this time around. See if you can figure it out, and please provide feedback. • The song editor window has been redesigned for better usability: a) the drum kit drawer has been moved into the main window and is much larger; b) the song name, details and kit are no longer accessed via a separate dialog sheet. • There are some minor bugs and incomplete features in this build which will be addressed shortly, including, but probably not limited to: a) inconsistent Undo behaviour for some actions; b) lack of ability to re- arrange song sections by dragging them in the lists. My $0.02 attempts

Hi All, I, too experimented with GarageBand over the weekend. It's way cool and more or less for what I've been looking for quite a while (without breaking the bank). The guitar parts are mostly real instruments (me). The rest is sampled or composed. I posted some mp3s. I did not use doggiebox for the drums. Although, I think I like G-Band's editor somewhat less than D-Box's in terms of control over individual voices for the drum parts. I do like G-Band for editing instrumental sequences and writing parts. What I posted was more or less my attempts to figure out how to use the program in various scenarios. The URL is http://k2.chem.uh.edu/bittner/Tunes/index.html.en Since I'm not a drummer and couldn't write a good drum score to save my life, the sampled sequences provided a good baseline for adding fills, crashes, etc. In the "12-bar-blues", I put crashes and hi-hats in time with the organ/guitar/horn riffs and to give some demarcation of chord changes. For longer pieces, more memory is certainly order. Editing multiple stanzas of "12-bar-blues" caused considerable slow downs every time I wanted to move a sequence or edit a note or two. Cheers! Pat; This is a really interesting clip. I have 2 teenaged daughters, a purchased version of DoggieBox, and a couple of Macs about. My kids are really looking forward to GarageBand coming to our house. (so am i) I had three women "air guitaring" it while listening to your clip. Boy, was I embarrased. Usually that's my job :-) I purchased DoggieBox to put into Deck LE (almost purchased last week; delayed it because of DoggieBox) I presume it's easy to haul things like DoggieBox clips in? Hello all Since adding the woodblock to the nskit, I've also put a tambourine and cowbell sound on as well. There's a new song called Xris using these sounds at: www.cinnamondesign.co.uk/music/music.html You can download the new kit and some others also as the db from the new improved site. The cowbell is a bit ropey to be honest as it was just found as an 8 bit sample on the net somewhere, so if anyone has a better one, I'd be grateful for a copy. The cowbell sound is one of the greatest of percussion sounds don't you think? Really like the song using the nskit, Bal - definitely the best there and doesn't seem to suffer much from being downsampled. drum sample downbeat alignment

Ben et al.: I have a question regarding the drum sound samples with a downbeat that does not occur at the start of the sample -- such as the 'shaker egg' that comes with Ben's Premier Kit. While trying it out recently I noticed a small rhythmic problem. To compensate for the fact that the downbeat occurs midway through the sample, I had to start the shaker egg a 16th earlier than I would have expected. Even though this worked, it was a pain in the ass. 8-) Therefore my question is: would it be feasible to add an 'offset' control to the drum kit editor? It could control the time before/after the downbeat that the sample would start. This would enable the user to have full control over where in the specific sample the downbeat is. Just a thought. John, Although your message seems directed to Pat, it made it to the list, which gives me a chance to chime in. The way the full version of Deck works, you need to "add audio to library". That's a menu command that I'm sure you'll find. You'll find and select a wav file which you've already exported from Doggiebox. You'll Deck split the file into left and right channels and land in the library. >From the library window, you'll drag first the left, then the right channel files into the track editor. For whatever reason, Deck does not permit a track to hold a single, stereo file. You can then drag the drum tracks around and line them up with other tracks in your composition. You can also numerically position them, which is great for when additional precision is required. I don't want to pull the list off topic, but I've had a chance to play with GarageBand today. It doesn't include a sequencer of any kind, so it's not really competing with DoggieBox for the drums, but does have tons of loops that you can layer and arrange... Ok, my results so far with playing along with DoggieBox. Powerbook G4, Griffin PowerWave, Fender MIM P Bass. This powerwave has switches for mic/line level, and hardware passthrough. It can be powered by the USB cable, and through it's own adapter. - With the powerwave plugged in, bass into mic input, real cheap headphones (free from an airline), hardware passthrough switched on, the output level was very low. I purchased a set of Seinhieser (sp?) headphones, and now level is great. line/mic set at line level. This is with running *no* applications. - There is a lot of noise, dependent on what is running on the laptop. My powerwave adapter is packed right now; maybe running on external power would clear this up. - running with doggiebox. Absolutely no problem. Adjust bass level with volume control on bass; doggiebox with any standard mac volume control. - running with SoundStudio, software loopback, gave a neat delay. If I ran with this app, with BOTH software and hardware loopback enabled, I got a really neat slap back echo. ;-) So, other than the noise issue, which *hopefully* can get cleared up quickly once I unpack my power adapter, this box looks ok. Ben; Ah, ok. I think I know what you are thinking of, and it makes sense. I come from a Linux background, so things are different, for sure. For input, I have this new Griffin Power-something-or-other that I am still learning how to use. It has a "line/mic" switch on it that increases gain. I have used it only to record from a tape deck; even in Line setting, the tape deck signal was *way* too strong; I had to reduce it drastically to not get this box to clip. I have 4 basses kicking around the house; 1 is a Fender active bass, and another Fender might get a pre-amp put in. But, from my little experiment above, I don't think that signal strength from passive instruments will be a problem. (4 bases? Two daughters play a bit, too) GarageBand looks interesting; anyone tried it yet? Thanks; John Stewart Ottawa, Canada.
