A few songs from a new user

Hi Folks, Calling myself a "new user" makes me feel a little like an addict, but I guess I am, since I've been in the studio every minute this week that my wife and job will allow... Having access to a program like Doggiebox has totally opened up my recording world, since drums are the one instrument I never learned to play very well. (Oh, and the lack of a kit might have something to do with that too...) I've got six songs up on my site right now... all recorded in the last week or so, and therefore a little rough around the edges. Admittedly, two of them are drumless. Dear DoggieBoxers; I have used the Demo version of DoggieBox to "play" along with - using it as a glorified drum machine. I have a USB audio box, and an old stereo mixer. Any ideas on how I can get rid of the mixer; ie, I want to internally mix the output of DoggieBox with my Bass plugged directly in to my powerbook. Hi John The only way I can think of doing that is by using the screen capture tool Snapz pro available for $49 at: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox You can use the movie capture facility as a get-around by setting the area to capture to a minimum and then extracting the audio from the resulting movie. As it records all the sounds that occur on the mac, you should be able to play along and record at the same time. Its probably a lot less fuss however to record your loop and import it to cubase or ProTools - its set up for overdubs then. Please be sure to buy your copy of Doggiebox though even if you go the Snapz route. Sion

hi, I want to record a drumkit for doggiebox. any tips? I just wanted to go out and record the kit of a friend. The user's guide mentions a sample rate of 44,1 Khz. does the bitrate matters? I added two new songs. #8 is done with the nskit(woodb.): great drum. comment is welcome. Since you guys are talkin' bit depth & stuff, I thought I'd ask a question... What do you recommend as the file format when exporting a Doggiebox song -- via "Export Song"? I usually use 'AIFF (Apple/SGI)' when exporting. After exporting the DB song, I then "Import Audio" into a Pro Tools session. However, after importing into Pro Tools there has been (only recently) some clipping on the DB import-track when I play it back in Pro Tools. Any thoughts? Should I be using a different file format when 'exporting'? I'm using Pro Tools 6.2.2, Mbox, on a Mac TiBook 667Mhz, 512MB RAM, with OS X 10.3.2. 1.0.6 and update on progress

Hey all, Doggiebox 1.0.6 is now available from <http://www.doggiebox.com/download.php>. This is a maintenance update that incorporates a couple of bug fixes and minor improvements. In particular: - Added an Italian language localization courtesy of Vella Bruno. - Fixed a bug where the Export progress dialog could not be canceled. - Fixed a couple of other potential conflicts with earlier versions of Mac OS X. In other news, I have been making decent progress on version 1.1. I was hoping to release a beta version before Christmas, but unfortunately things have fallen behind schedule a bit. You can look forward to a new build early in the new year, the first major improvement being revamped song layout and structuring capabilities. Ringo's kit is fun too. I've got a few kits kind of half done using samples from records and filled out with existing samples form other kits. I think I've about 8 levels of velocity - you can fine tune it yourself too anyway,as you know. Cheers Sion

Just going through some old postings to the group and found this request from Carl - been meaning to look into soundfonts for a while and now I'm pleased to say that I've been able to sample the woodblock soundfont and copy it into the excellent doggiebox version of the ns-kit. You can download this from my site: http://www.cinnamondesign.co.uk/music/music.html was able to do this using Midikeys, Simplesynth and Audio Hijack. Hi Charlie, The M-box looks great (it has the same features as the Tascam, with the Pro Tools software added, wich is great. Some comment on your songs. 1. Love is blind. - The drum's still a little bit too loud... I do agree with an earlier comment : too much cymballs. A real life drummer would never put that much accents on the cymbals. I downloaded your .dbsong-file, and I think you've deleted some cymbals, but didn't update your mix with the new version. You should try it. - And the voice the voice too much in the back ground. I believe in a popsong your voice is the main instrument, this should sound the brightest and most in front. Maybe if you just lower the volume of the drum, your voice will come more in front. Though, when I listen through a headphone, it sounds better. (you know, I make a mix in my headphones, on my stereo, my built in speakers on the G4 and my littel portable radio. If the balance is ok on all of then, then there's a big change it also will be ok with someone else. This works fine since I don't have any expensive studio monitors.) - But generaly it sounds much better then the first time. Did you do some EQ on the final mix? - Canadian Whisky? 2. A nice 60's song with a psychedellic break. I also used the handclaps right away when the chief magician added them (in 'don't sing at work', I was so enthousiast I'm afraid I overdone it a bit). Same remarks : try putting the drums a bit more to the background and your singing will come more in front (nice backing vocals - how did you make them so 'light'?) Keep up the good work! I use an M-Audio Firewire 410, BIAS Deck, and an Oktava MK-319. The Oktava is a great mic dirt cheap from Guitar Center, and Deck LE is under $100. I strongly urge you to go firewire over USB- In my experience, USB just can't handle the bandwidth of doing realtime audio. Somehow (sorry I've already forgotten the name) released a djembe kit last week for Doggiebox. It was exactly what I needed to finish a song so I thought I'd share. I'm not really a drummer, much a djembe drummer by nature so I imagine I'm using it all wrong :) The song is called "Atone". Hi Charlie, Thanks for your reaction. - On 'Ruby' I added a little reverb on the drums. When mixing it down to stereo 2-track I used a TC Electronic Tripple C compressor. It makes the sound a bit 'fatter' and 'louder'. But the trick is done by Doggiebox: I love it. - 'Keep it' drove my G4 to its limits, with a whole lot of processing (modulation& distortion&a lot of reverb&delay& a bit of chorus) to cover up the poor quality of the built-in mic. Don't get a real job yet! First think about what you really need: are you recording on your own or with a band? When working alone you can use something like the Tascam US-122. It's USB, 24 bits, has inserts (nice!), XLR and 1/4 inputs, phantom, etc . .. Good value for your money! If you use it with Pro Tools Free, you can do al lot of nice things without spending a lot of money earned earned on a real job. If you're working with a band and want to do multitrack recording then the Motu is very nice (apart from the two crappy mic pre amps - they sound thin and you can't 'finetune' the input). But with a mixer it's great. Howerver, the thing that was more determinant for the sound quality to me was the microphone. The AKG is expensive, but you can find a lot of cheap condenser mics, for 100 € or less. Although (here we go again)... there's is lot of good you can say about something like a Shure SM57. I believe the time you invest in experimenting with positioning your mic and adding some accoustic panels around your soundsource is even more valueable (?english?) as the money you pay for an expensive mic. But to be honest: I've sold my soul a long time ago and got the real job! Forthcoming features?

I was wondering if there was any set timetable for the addition of precise dynamic control (the first of the listed forthcoming features- individual velocity adjustments per drum and per bar)... As soon as this feature's implemented I'll be registering. I love the interface, but I have a tendency to use a lot of hi-hat 16th rhythms, which sound thoroughly unconvincing when every hit has the same velocity. The humanizer feature will also be wonderful, but not as crucial to making convincing drum tracks. Thanks for this great piece of software... can't wait until it grows into its full potential :). -Mike

I've been trying to use the new Djembe kit the last couple of days. I keep getting crashes right after creating the song, either when adding a new drum sound or zooming in on a measure. Hey All- Apologies if this comes to the list twice -- I kept trying to send it from the wrong account. D'oh! I've been lurking a bit here, as I've not had a chance to use Doggiebox (or even update it!) for about 5 months now. Anyhow, I finally posted some songs I recorded with Doggiebox about 6 months ago. They are by no means complete (no vocals, rough mixes, etc.), but might serve as an example. All songs were done in ProTools and used Doggiebox (except for one) with Ben's kit for the drum tracks.
