Good idea. Another one might be to reverse a long-decaying cymbal to create a crescendo effect. drum sound editing trick

Hey all-- Thought this might be of interest to those of you looking to add variety to your existing DB kits. I just discovered that I can take a cymbal sound into an editor, nip off just the front few microseconds of it, and get a sound like a softer hit on that cymbal. It's not perfect, because the initial attack of the stick tip actually hitting the metal is lost. But it sounds surprisingly good, especially in the mix of a well-built DBsong, and it's sure a lot easier than trying to RECORD half a dozen different attacks on each cymbal. Cheers, Dan

Summertime is a rough period to park oneself before their mac and devote lots of time to programming. That is, for those of us not free to roam with laptops. I have done a couple of things with my "Behan Box II" kit, and I've been digging the garage sound it gives me. I'm dying to use the "70's Ludwig Kit" on something. I really dig the approach to the different snare sounds there. The "buzz", "flam", and "rim" sounds all offer some nice possiblities. Autumn's coming. What version of DB? What kit? How is the file set up (any meter/tempo changes)? I mainly use the Hemberger Stereo kit and the more recently added 70's Ludwig kit, but also a couple other kits, and it's never done that to me. And I've exported some pretty crazy stuff, 7/8 to 4/4, 5/4, mixed tempos, insane triplet "scrape" fills, mixed kits (with pieces of other kits added in), songs as long as 7 minutes, etc. Unless someone knows exactly how to fix this, would you be willing to send me your .dbsong file? I've got some time this afternoon-- I could test it on my setup. If you do send the file, be sure to send it straight to my email address (as you can't send files via the email list). Cheers, Dan

Doggie Box Strangeness

Hello, I hope I am sending this to the right place. Let me see if I cn explain my problem. I am in the middle of doing drum tracks for a demo (natch), and when I export the audio, it doubles some notes in various places throughout the song. It doesn't do this while I am listening to play back in DB, only on export. I have done averything from bringing down the overall volume, to just exporting sections, and it still does this. Assuming the obvious reply (why???) is innapropriate, I think you're more or less on the right track. If you're after realism, you should be careful with your hi-hat. You can't be double-bassing and foot pedaling your hi-hat simultaneously. You can hit the closed hi-hat with a stick if your real-life kit has one of those clutches that allow you to disconnect the pedal and allow gravity to let the top cymbal sit on top of the bottom one. There's also the double pedal/single drum configuration to consider. In this case, the drum does not have time to relax before the "left" foot hits it and therefore, purists will insist that it is not true double-bass. Personally, the only double bass tune I've ever appreciated is Alex VanHalen's intro to Hot for Teacher. Imitating double bass drum?

While strolling along with the iPod today, Motorhead's old chestnut "Overkill" popped up with its insane bass drum intro. I think I've read this was actually played on a single drum pedal, but it sure feels like a double bass drum pedal to me, and I starting wondering how to imitate that kinda double bass drum vibe in DB. I don't know enough about the dynamics of drumming to really know what makes what sound like what, but I'm guessing maybe one foot (the drummer's dominant?) would consistently have a harder attack, and therefore different sound? Perhaps one could just make a "left" and "right" foot in the dbkit (like the ns_kit Mike made has "left" and "right" snare) using a slightly lower velocity for the "left" foot (assuming a right-footed drummer, though the ns_kit snares actually use sampled hits made by a left and a right hand, I think :) Or perhaps a sample from a different but similar kick drum for the other "foot"? I guess one might want to pan the two feet a bit to either side of the stereo spectrum, though that's more a mixing issue .... Any thoughts from people who understand these things better than I? BTW, complete non-sequitur: What are DBing guitarists using for home recording? I've done my one posted project with DB drums using the built in amp sims in my Roland VS-1680 recording module since my apt. is currently too small to keep my old 50w Laney combo in the office/studio/bedroom -- and though that turned out OK, it's not the most flexible thing in the world. I've been considering going down the road of something like a V-Amp (maybe the Bass V-Amp, since it has has both guitar and bass amp simulators) that would in theory give me a bunch of amp toys in a small, quiet package, though I understand you can't really stick extra outboard effects (like my pile of old stompboxes) in an effects loop like you can with a normal guitar amp, which is a bit lame, IMO. Anyone have a compact, flexible solution they like? I don't really want to go with a Mac-based solution because of the difficulty of getting audio into my iBook! (I don't want to turn the DB list into a home-recording list, but I did figure some folks here might have some thoughts on these issues. Y'all can mail me off-list if that would be better!). Only thing I've been bothered by is the naming-- I can name the .dbsong file one thing, but that doesn't show up in the editing screen as the name of the piece. Is that supposed to be like that? So you can have the filename be a different reference or naming scheme, and then have the full name "inside" the file? Also, I've had difficulty sometimes changing the tempo/time setting. It seems to have the most trouble with this after I've changed the name of a section, or changed some characteristic about it in the playlist... anyway, if I "undo" clear back to the first change I made to the section, then it lets me change the tempo. Otherwise, though, it lets me bring up the "change tempo/time" dialogue, and lets me change the numbers in the fields, but when I hit "modify" the dialogue box closes, and nothing changes.

Also, couple of things on the recent build: 1. Very minor cosmetic fix: The up and down buttons next to the tempo are slightly overlapped. This obscures the down button. They both still work, but... 2. This may have been covered before; seems familiar somehow. Anyway, I've got a couple pretty long files going now, and I was in the middle of playing back through one of them when the &#$% cat wanted in. Yowling, scratching the screen, making me crazy. So I hit, uh, wait, crap, there's no pause button. If I hit STOP, I'll have to either highlight the entire second half of the song to play it back, or just start over from the beginning again (which is 3 solid minutes of drums...) If I just let it run, I'll miss the part I wanted to hear by the time I get back from scolding the $%&*ing cat. And there's no ignoring this cat. Fifteen pounds of attitude and "I ain't goin' NO-WHERE 'til you let me in and feed me, you ungrateful slave." So... pause button? Or at least a way to "play from this point on" rather than just the highlighted measures? I'll do some MIDI file testing this afternoon. Cheers Dan

I didn't get any crashes since I'm using DB, what system do you have panther or ? Glad to see others are calling for more handy ways of "stretching" the beat and "swinging" the rhythm. Those things would certainly help Doggiebox fulfill the dreams we all have for it. I've also wondered how DB could represent the kind of drum stroke that LASTS longer than just a hit--i.e. where the sound starts before the beat on which it "lands", or alternately, continues to sound well afterward. Rolls are, of course, an example that could belong to either category. iDrum can't be the only program that attempts to "humanize" computer-generated rhythms, so there must be other relevant examples. And maybe there are some notation tricks out there for dealing with those lingering strokes that could be adapted for use with Doggiebox. If so, perhaps it's time to consider adding such refinements to what is already a great program. -Sterling

iDrum's swing thing

Mike (and all)-- I just re-read this before sending, and it may sound a bit abrasive or unappreciative... On the contrary, if I didn't think DoggieBox was one of THE BEST pieces of music software the Mac has EVER seen, I wouldn't have bothered to write. Keep up the fantastic work-- DB is a dream come true for me and my musical endeavors. Now, on to my frustration... ;-) Concerning the swing setting for iDrum, it's most likely a "stretcher" of the off-beat eighth notes in a pattern, which is a very valuable feature. I've wanted to ask about this topic for a while now. The concept is: straight eighths (all 8 of 'em in a 4/4 measure, normally on a hi-hat in a rock or latin pattern) occur precisely on, and precisely half-way between, each beat. (ONE AND / TWO AND / THREE AND / FOUR AND) A heavy swing pattern would have the hi-hat or ride cymbal off-beat eighth notes (ex. the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th ones in a 4/4 measure) feeling like triplet eighths. (ONE and A / TWO and A / THREE and A / FOUR and A) The total time of the overall measure, however, and the timing of the main beats, would be exactly the same as a rock or latin measure at the same tempo. If I want a more subtle swing, I would play those off-beats somewhere in between straight and tripletted. (Whoa, now I'm makin' up words. Gettin' fired up here.) So... Solution 1: if I have a "swing" setting like iDrum's, I could adjust the timing of the off-beats across the entire pattern (or, ideally, any section of the pattern I choose) with a simple change of a single setting. Solution 2: If I want to do this in DoggieBox... Do I stretch out the view of every measure so I can manually place each off-beat cymbal hit (or "swung" hit on whatever drum) a hemi-demi-semiquaver or two late? This will not only take an unreasonable amount of time and effort, but it will also make for an extremely messy DB-to-MIDI-to-sheet music conversion, with lots of flags and double-dotted notes... most written "swing" patterns display the 8th notes straight, and indicate the swing feel at the top or at each swung section. (light/med/heavy swing, up by the tempo) Or Solution 3: Do I record my own custom cymbal (or whatever drum) sound with half a triplet's worth of extra space in front of it, so when it triggers precisely on the beat, it doesn't actually make the sound until a half-triplet later? This would work for a "strictly swing" kit... But many jazz charts flip-flop back and forth between straight 8ths and swung 8ths... now I need a bigger kit to include both recorded sounds...? What if I don't want a full hard swing? Now I need ANOTHER recording of those sounds that are only SLIGHTLY late? Ugh... Anyone else working with swing patterns have a more practical solution to this? Hello, Would anyone happen to know of any shareware apps that allow you to import audio and save it as a 24-bit file? I currently use SoundStudio, but that limits you to 16-bit files..... 1C5 with various improvements

Yup, that's right, a new build already... <http://www.doggiebox.com/distribution/Doggiebox-1C5.zip> Notes for 1C5 (21 May 2004): • Several cosmetic improvements have been made to the playback controls in the song document window, including new buttons for expand/collapse in the pattern editor. • Playback operation has been simplified such that if one or more bars are selected, they will play; otherwise all currently visible bars will play. It is no longer necessary to hit option-space to play the current selection. • There is a new checkbox in the drum kit editor labeled "interrupts other variants of same type". This now provides manual control over which drum sounds pre-empt others (which used to be determined automatically using some limited hard-coded rules documented in the 1A5 release notes). Turn this on for things like closed hi hats and muted crash cymbals, and off for others that can be struck many times simultaneously. (Existing drum kits will be upgraded automatically.) • There is a new checkbox in Preferences labeled "mute audio playback when MIDI is active". With this enabled, the net effect is that audio will play back either via MIDI or your speakers, depending on what's available. With it disabled, sound will always play back through the speakers regardless of MIDI being connected. (This replaces the "play audio/midi" toggles introduced in 1C2.) • The MIDI playback level now respects the master volume setting. • Incoming MIDI messages now control selection of the default drum in the song editor. Comments, suggestions, etc as usual are cool. The astute may notice "Export MIDI..." in the File menu.
