I've just completed my first song with DoggieBox - excellent (the software, not the song) The only thing I could have used that wasn't already there was an addition to the Drum kit of Hand claps. Any chance they could be added to one of the kits???? Cheers Charlie

Boy this hand clap thing has turned out to be much more than just the quick little tweak it started as. phew. i am trying my hardest to even imagine a situation where i'd need them. maybe if i was doing a remake of the happy days theme song... sorry I'm only kidding. Good luck guys. There's nothing out there on the web you could pull into a new kit? I second that. Right now thats basically what i do on paper, then program out the beats one by one and copy and paste and tweak till it's all set. Using your approach would really streamline the "song" creation part after the beats were set. Not only that, but you would save yourself the headache of having to copy and past all those bars trying to get that last chorus just right. and its really hard to visualize... even with the section marker list thing that's there now. I have to say it never occured to me to have the software keep track of things, i just grabbed a pen and paper. Here's a post I made back in February for some abilities I'd like to see in Doggiebox. Several list members chimed in with their support, and I assume that's still the case: (begin old post) I think there is a great opportunity for enhancing the sequencing abilities of Doggiebox. The interface focus could change, making the process of creating drum parts much easier. Basically, you'd base the entire editing interface on a song section (to use the terminology from the Doggiebox section marker list). Edits are made one section at a time, and all sections still appear in the section list. The interface twist is that, instead of piecing together a song in the editor window, you do it in a "song-map" window that's basically a table of the drum sections in the order you want them to be played back and, for each section, how many bars should be played, what the starting bar is, etc. A song could then be put together by dragging sections from the section list into the song-map. A song could quickly change by reordering the song-map list, changing any song-map section's playback parameters, or adding/deleting sections from the song-map. An example song might be comprised of the following sections, all 4 bars each: Intro, Verse, Chorus, Chorus2, and Interlude. Quickly arranging those sections into a song could result in something that looks like: Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Chorus2, Interlude, Chorus, Chorus2. Maybe you want the last Chorus2 to repeat - just double the number of bars it plays for. Maybe something's missing in the change from Chorus to Chorus2 - create a new section called ChorusTransition that's 1 bar long, put it in between the Chorus/Chorus2 sections, and have the related Chorus play only 3 instead of 4 bars. Maybe the first bar of the Chorus after the Interlude needs more symbols - create a new section called InterludeTransition, 1 bar long, place it after the Interlude, have that post-Interlude Chorus start on bar 2 and now play only 2 bars (since we also use ChorusTransition). At least for me, putting together and editing a song in this fashion would be a lot simpler than having a long editing window full of similar looking bars encompassing the entire song. Of course, there's no reason why the two forms of editing can't coexist simultaneously, having a switch for the editor to go between section and full song mode. Lets go back to that InterludeTransition. Say we just directly edit that first bar of Chorus after the Interlude. The software could automatically set up a new section called Fill1, insert Fill1 between the Interlude and Chorus in the song-map, and change that Chorus' starting bar to 2. Later, you could rename Fill1 to InterludeTransition. I can't wait. The freestyle mode will really open things up for me and other newcomers to step writing. Having the option to just tap in what i need will really speed things up. As i've said before to be able to tap in something then see what it looks like in its step written form will be an incredible teaching tool... so i can leave the tapping in the dust someday. I've been shouting from the roof tops about doggiebox too! i bring it up in almost every post on the Korg PXR4 board. as well as in regular conversation with many of my mac-loving musician friends. Why wouldn't i? it just rocks. the only downside is that i can no longer listen to music the way i used to... every beat bounces around in my head as i wonder what how i would go about getting it into doggiebox. i just never thought about the drums before. thanks for the wake up. and all helpful people in here that answer my newbie questions. so damn cool. dan walsh

Improvements to the song editor: - Fixed a bug where some Undo functions would not work in a newly created song. - Fixed a bug where importing or exporting sounds would fail when the filename contained non-standard characters. - Fixed a bug where it was impossible to delete the first section marker in the list. - Added a collapse-to-mono toggle button. - Improved responsiveness of user interface and position indicator after stopping playback. - Improved the alert messages when a drum kit is missing or unavailable -- no longer says "Cannot find '(null)'". WAVs from SF2?

Does anyone know a (free) tool for pulling WAVs (or AIFFs) out of SF2 soundfont files? I'm trying to get a the underlying samples out of the (freely downloadable) Natural Studio woodblocks <http://www.natural-studio.co.uk/ns_woodblock.htm>. It downloads as a .sfArk file, which I can turn into a regular soundfont, but I'm darned if I can pry the samples back out as WAVs or the like. The only significant change from 1A17 is that the "save as" dialogs for exporting sounds and images from the drum kit editor are now implemented. Also, I've tweaked the look-and-feel of the Loop and Mono buttons in the song document window. Feedback on any of these things is appreciated. Has anyone thought of making a few basic rock beats available to d/l? It would be a huge help to those of us having trouble getting the step-writing thing going. I've been going to a few free drum lesson sites and putting in some of the charts to get a grasp of this but most of that stuff is rudiments and aren't really all that useful for jamming with. To see a few useable (even typical) beats and be able to de-construct them would do wonders. Though I understand that most people using this software already know what their doing, nor do i expect them to hold my hand. Still trying, Dan Walsh

Hey folks, Things not looking so good for an "official" Doggiebox version of ns_kit... on the other hand, I can't see what might prevent a third party from making it available somewhere. Cool, I appreciate the feedback Richard! (Since this did not seem to make it to the list, I'm CCing this reply) I ended up deciding to go with the MOTU for now. Some reasons: - cost is cheaper by 50% - bundled software may suit me, if not, i can upgrade to full DP4 for a couple hundred bucks - more onboard mix capabilities - level meters on front of the unit I've got zero experience with midi and probably won't be doing any such recording for awhile (my main interest is recording actual instruments performed by humans) but it's cool to know that DP is good in that regard. My sense was also that while ProTools is the "de facto standard" in the industry, they are similarly limited to not changing their software much for fear of inconveniencing seasoned users (see Macworld review in the recent June issue I think). Thus I can hope that MOTU's software might be more innovative in some regards. Oh yes, another factor was that unlike ProTools, if I were to upgrade to DP4 I would then be able to take sessions on the road with me and mix from my powerbook without having to lug around the 19" hardware dongle. Velocity control

I'm just quickly putting my vote on this item from the "Forthcoming feature concepts" list: >more control over dynamics: individual velocity adjustments per drum and >per bar. Though does this imply one would be able to accent an individual drum hit (e.g. put a little extra force on that first note of the triplet, or the kick drum on the downbeat)?? That would be excellent, since at present I can think of no way to accomplish that except by having a second, "accented" sample for each kind of drum in the drum kit pallete. Or is a second, higher velocity sample, the only way to effect that? If so, would it make sense to build higher velocity, accented samples into the drum kits, but then access those sounds in the Doggiebox UI by simply designating a given hit as "accented" (and Doggiebox would know "behind the scenes" to use the second, higher velocity sample on that hit)?? MOTU DP4 vs. ProTools LE

Hey all, I am on the verge of dropping a bunch of clams on either a MOTU 828mkII or a Digidesign 002 Rack system. Does anybody have any particular feedback or preferences regarding ProTools vs. Digital Performer? (As an aside, I know that DP4 supports AudioUnit plug-ins... but does ProTools LE?) Hey all, A new beta build is ready for your consumption, which begins to make some improvements in the usability of the drum kit editor... including: - New support for dragging and dropping sound files to and from the Finder. - New volume slider control for adjusting each drum sound. - New support for dragging and dropping drum images to and from the Finder, or directly from graphics applications, as well as copy/paste using the clipboard. The drag and drop thing should help dramatically reduce the pain-in-the- ass factor of creating and maintaining drum kits. (Note that the "Save..." buttons for both sound and image are not yet implemented, but should be in the next build.) As a very inexperienced user all of this makes little difference to me. Any major changes to the UI would be a bit of a curve ball but since I know very little to begin with I'd have very little to re-learn. The only significant change that would help newbies would be the tap feature as far as I'm concerned. Hope I'm not sounding like a broken record.

I've had some luck with the Natural Studio samples. Their aim is to have the best sampled free drum kit available. Check it out: http://www.nskit.com/ The sounds are very high quality. The samples are setup with velocity layers for sampler/sequencer type software, but if you download the set of .wav files you can pick and choose the samples you want for doggieBox. The levels need to be adjusted a bit because of this, but they sound great. Ben, you might want to check these out for when you get around to working the dynamics / velocity feature. -Scott
