Hey all,
I'm pleased to finally post the first in what I hope to be an evolving series of testing/development builds over the coming while... and to start off, I have taken a preliminary tackle of a much-requested feature: multi-track export!
Grab it at http://www.doggiebox.com/distribution/Doggiebox-1G01.zip
There is a new menu command, "Export Multiple Tracks", whose function should be mostly self-explanatory: specify a filename of "Test.aiff" (for example) and Doggiebox will create files "Test 1.aiff" through "Test 5.aiff", each corresponding to a mix of only those instruments appearing in the corresponding grid line in the editor.
This should help facilitate post-production and alleviate a lot of the tedium that people have had to deal with when trying to export drum tracks in pieces.
I'm interested to hear about how this seems to work in practice, and whether more refined levels of control are necessary (e.g. for splitting up the mix).

Nice thanks! This worked well for me in a cursory attempt this morning.

Is there anyway to name the tracks other than sequentially on export? For example, take on the name of the instrument in a given lane? Test Kick.aiff, Test snare.aiff, etc.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet (maybe this weekend!) but I would agree that if it were possible to parse the instrument name and add it to the output file that that would probably be a handy addition to what promises to be an awesome feature. :)
Cheers, Carl

Yeah, good idea; probably the way to do this is allow the user to name the grid components within the drum kit editor (since depending on the kit, they may not necessarily be kick, snare, etc). The kit editor has been due for an overhaul for a long time.

I'm gonna grab this tonight and give it a whirl. If it works, it will open up a few new doors for me!

Dang. I had such high hopes. On my aging G4, this won't run. I get a message during the export process warning me that I am going to replace some files even though I'm saving into an empty folder.
Cryptic mumbo jumbo pasted below from a crash log.

Hey all,
I'm pleased to finally post the first in what I hope to be an evolving series of testing/development builds over the coming while... and to start off, I have taken a preliminary tackle of a much-requested feature: multi-track export!

On my aging G4, this won't run. I get a message during the export process warning me that I am going to replace some files even though I'm saving into an empty folder.
Hmm. I hadn't tested it yet under 10.4 (just 10.5), but in doing so now, I realize that I'm not even getting the save dialog -- Doggiebox just sits there as though I hadn't told it to export (and logs some errors to the console). I'll look at this more closely, thanks.

Is the issue Mike reported a 10.4 vs. 10.5 issue, or a PPC vs. Intel issue -- or both? Admittedly, though I haven't had a chance to give the new build a spin yet, it sounds like the fact I've still got 10.4, though on an Intel machine, may prevent it from working as-is anyway .....

Yeah... I think I may have oversimplified my feedback. The non-Intel G4 was what I mentioned, but I never even thought of the OS version.
I have a Powerbook running 10.5, but it's my employer's asset and I'm not able to install DB on it (even though I'd like to).

It sounds like a 10.4 thing, as it works successfully for me under 10.5 on both PPC and Intel, though I had the failure under 10.4/PPC.
These multiple architectures are really complicating things aren't they. I should set up an additional couple of systems here for more regular testing against the variants.
If you find it works for you on 10.4/Intel though that would be interesting.

good to see you back - FWIW, I did a quick test on my G5 running 10.4.11 and it all worked fine except for the minor point that Mike got before his export
This bit: "I get a message during the export process warning me that I am going to replace some files even though I'm saving into an empty folder."
I clicked yes and the five files were exported as expected - when played as one in mono they match the usual export .

Thanks, I've found that bug -- silly one -- was always putting up the dialog regardless of whether there were files.
Still need to sort out why it's not consistently working under 10.4 however (for me or Mike at least). Interesting that it IS working for you...

Can I conduct a very rough poll as to which recording software most of you use, given that they pretty much all have integrated drum programs these days?
I use Pro Tools LE 7.4 CS9 and Leopard. I have yet to try out Doggiebox with it.
Adrian
I use Garageband on Tiger (10.4, so not the latest version of Garageband, but the latest version that runs on Tiger, anyway!) on an Intel Mac Mini. For drums, I either program stuff in Doggiebox or I sometimes use third-party drum loops (mostly either Beta Monkey or Drums on Demand); mostly I use drum loops when sketching things out and then later program a drum part in DB. :)

ProTools 7.3 - quite often use GarageBand as a sort of "sketch" tool - esp drum loops as a guide. I use DB for the final drums - although I've started to use DB as an adjunct to loops.
DB is great when you have different tempo's etc during a song. Export the DB file as MIDI and import to ProTools, this sets up PT with the correct tempo markers.

Great when you have different time-signatures, too. I've got a couple of songs that shift between 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4, but almost all the drum loops I might use for sketching out a track are 4/4, so in these cases I program it all in DB from the beginning. I sometimes chop up my initial DB tracks whilst sketching and treat the bits as loops, but then I typically go back and reprogram my dbsong file to match what I want.
