AIFF/WAV Stereo Mix Tempo problem

Is anyone else not able to get their AIFF/WAV exports to line up with a click track? I'm using a software bass guitar in Logic Express and it's always ahead of the drums almost immediately, thus making my pre-made midi tracks impossible to use. I'm running the latest beta version on 10.5.8. Thanks, Aaron

Hey all, I've just posted a new build which addresses the following: - Fixed bugs that caused exporting to fail in some circumstances (with a spurious sample rate and channel selection, as well as incorrect disk free space calculation). Thanks Charlie and Jack. - Fixed a redrawing issue that followed an insert or removal of beats. - Fixed a recent regression where some preferences (particularly MIDI endpoints) were not sticking. - The tempo basis selector in transport panel is now left-clickable. Couple of long-standing fixes (one big, one tiny)

Hi Haakon, I'm not sure whether you're still actively using Doggiebox, but I wanted to let you know that I've finally resolved a couple of different issues that you reported to me a LONG time ago! First, there was a problem in which MIDI files exported by Doggiebox would sometimes dritft and not match the proper tempo. You first reported this in July 2008, and Jack Saturn followed up with the same evidence recently. Fortunately I've finally been able to nail down the issue, and it's fixed as build 1G11 (posted a few days ago). In a related issue, sometimes MIDI files simply would not export at all. This is also fixed (thanks to Jack and David Sampson for reporting this as well). Finally, a small one: The basis note by which the tempo is counted (e.g., quarter note = XXX bpm) will now be changeable simply by clicking on it in the inspector to get the pop-up menu. Previously, you had to right-click, which was obscure. Hey gang, Long-time Doggiebox user but haven't been on the list for awhile. As I was just re-subscribing I read about the new versions that Ben has been putting out this summer. Just downloaded the newest. Great work! I'm actually writing with a question regarding MIDI export. Traditionally I've used Doggiebox for coming up with complete drumkit arrangements, which I would then export as stereo WAV files and use in making demos. Concurrently, I've always arranged my instrumental parts (minus drums) in Finale. After years of doing this, I decided I'd actually like to try putting them together - namely, importing MIDI from Doggiebox and Finale into Pro Tools and running the data through Kontakt for sounds. My problem is that the tempo/duration of the Doggiebox and Finale files are not identical, despite the BPMs and measure numbers being the same on both. I've tried combining tracks for a few of my songs and it seems like the drums always begin to lag behind the Finale tracks. I'm running OS X 10.5.8, Pro Tools 7.4 and a M-Audio ProFire LightBridge. Anybody experienced in this realm and know what I might do to remedy this problem? I'd be glad to provide MIDI files for anyone to analyze. This could be the key to me completing a long-delayed album, so I owe a huge debt of gratitude to whomever may help me figure this out. Thanks! Jack

I had been running into problems with the midi export to certain folders. However, after being prompted for an upgrade (doing it) and trying again, the problem went away. I attribute it to gremlins. thanks dave

Audio export problem.

Ben, This is different than the MIDI export problem I wrote about last night. I thought I'd troubleshoot my MIDI problem by exporting a stereo file from Doggiebox 2.0 and comparing it to the MIDI track in Pro Tools, but ran up against this: When I go to export, the window shows up with the Sample Rate set to 0 and the number of channels set as 3355443. When I switch the Sample Rate to any of the various settings, I'm told that "Approximately 4096.0 MB will be required" for the exported file, and thus not enough room on my hard drive. The same set of problems (and numbers) greet me when I try to do the multi-track export. I've also run into an issue similar to what Dave had reported when exporting a MIDI file - I can't get the export to save in certain folders, and now it seems to not want to save anywhere. Again, running OS 10.5.8 on a 2.5 Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. Jack

MIDI Export

Let me follow up with something. I tried it again and discovered that I can export a file or section to the Mac OSX Desktop. I set up a folder under my music directory and dragged a shortcut to the finder left hand side and tried saving to that folder. It didn't export. So this would appear to be related to pathing. I also tried the full path through navigation to the one I had set up as a shortcut in Finder and it didn't work there. So I'm wondering if a directory is set up as a short cut, does DB have a problem with that. BTW, I was trying to enter some drum transcription in Sibelius, and it was just toooooooooo long a process. I fired up DB and it went very smoothly. Glad I have DB for these kinds of things. It's a great program. dave

MIDI Export

I'm having trouble with the MIDI export. I selected several sections and was able to export them to a file. However, now I can't seem to export anything to midi. I've tried restarting the program and rebooting the machine, but no midi export. I'm running the latest beta. Anyone else having this issue or know a workaround? thanks dave

Great that there's a new version - have had a quick look and like the new styling of the control panels. Record button looks like a great idea. I wonder if this could be married up with some midi drum pads? On another note what does everyone think of a DB Facebook page. we could all interact - post up songs/resources etc maybe? Drag and drop in the pattern editor

Hey all, I've just posted build 1G10, which finally brings another fundamental feature which has LONG been on my wish/plan list: drag and drop support for moving and copying bars in the pattern editor. I think this will quickly prove to be one of those little things where in retrospect we wonder how we managed to put up without it for so long! Drag to rearrange; option-drag to duplicate. You can also drag between different documents. I'm going to think about whether there are any useful operations to be had by e.g. dragging bars to the section list or playlist; any workflow-related suggestions could be useful here too. Hey everybody, It's hard to believe that ten months have passed since I last posted the a pre-release build of the Dog. Nonetheless that should help to make tonight's all the more tasty. Simply run a "Check for Update..." in the Doggiebox application menu to grab it automatically, or download from <http://www.doggiebox.com/ development.php>. Improvements fall under these four main themes: - New floating palette with better transport controls - New recording mode for keyboard or MIDI drum input - Bug fixes, including the missing export progress indicator - Simplification of some prefs options and various cosmetic improvements Of important note is that, with this build and moving forward, Doggiebox will now require Mac OS X 10.5 or newer in order to take best advantage of facilities afforded by the latest OS. Furthermore, statistics gathered from 1G-series testers since last July indicate that not a single user with 10.4 has run any of these builds, so it appears a sound decision. Also, due to a minor change in how registration keys are saved, it's possible that Doggiebox will think it's no longer registered when you launch this build. If that happens, simply re-activate with your registration key. Following, now, is the verbose laundry list of changes and improvements in this build (also included as Release Notes with the download). New floating palette with transport and editing controls: - Play/stop button and loop toggle have been moved here, along with new buttons for start/end and forward/back jog, plus record enable. - Bar-editing controls (insert/remove beats, tempo and time signature adjustments, and zoom) have been moved here. - Current location of the insertion point/playhead is displayed, in bars and beats as well as minutes:seconds. - Looping and monophonic fold-down are now controlled globally and have corresponding commands in the Song menu. New recording mode: - When recording is enabled, drum kit shortcut keys (and incoming MIDI messages) will cause the corresponding drum to be inserted at the insertion point/playhead location. - To switch drum variants via the keyboard, you must now press the Option key along with the shortcut. Changes to several Preferences options: - Removed checkbox for toggling the playhead position indicator; it is now always shown (turning this off was an obscure choice of vestigial origin). - Removed checkbox for creating backward-compatible files; songs saved with this version will be compatible back to Doggiebox 1.3. - Removed checkbox for showing splash screen on launch; it is now only shown in trial mode. - Added new checkbox to toggle MIDI MMC/MTC output; previously this always occurred, but can now be turned off if unneeded. Bugs fixed in this build: - Missing progress indicator during audio file export (temporary regression in 1G08). - Long-standing potential crash when changing a bar's tempo during playback (thanks Charlie). - Bug which caused MIDI output to be very late or absent altogether (temporary regression since 1G04). - Issue which caused "HVURLHandlerErrorDomain error 1003" when displaying the Help Viewer on Snow Leopard. Miscellaneous changes: - Cosmetic and display improvements in the pattern editor. - The playhead now keeps moving even when the mouse button is down or a menu is being displayed. - Improved the reliability of detecting when a drum kit in use by an open song has been modified. - Key shortcut for "zoom in/out selection" changed from Cmd-Shift to Cmd- Option (and +/-). I would enjoy feedback, and particularly bug reports, relating to anything described above. As times goes by I feel loathe to refer to these builds as "beta", lest it confirm the old creature has come down with Google syndrome; alas, while an official public new release is still premature, it does approach. After updating, you may notice that the release version moniker has tentatively changed from "1.5" to "2.0". Owing to marketing and technological considerations, I've decided it probably time to up the number, and my plan is to target a full public release by the fall -- which will also be the first pay-for upgrade that Doggiebox has seen. ProTools Free manuals (house cleaning)

Hi all, This is an extreme long shot, I know, but I thought I'd ask this anyway. Some years back, I went through the trouble to print out all of the manuals that go with ProTools Free. Oldsters may remember that Digidesign offered its final version of ProTools for OS 9 (and the contemporaneous version for Windows, I think for 98 or ME) for free after they rewrote code for the OSes of the future (i.e., OS X and Windows NT/XP). All these years later, in a world with GarageBand and free versions of Cubase included with various bits of audio hardware, I want to get rid of those manuals. I could just throw them out (and probably will end up having to), but before I do so I thought I'd check: is there anyone out there who might want them? All I'd want for them is postage, which given that I live in Japan may be more than you want to spend even if you still are doing audio in Mac OS 9 (which means you aren't using Doggiebox . . . if you haven't figured it out already, now you see why I prefaced this with the words "extreme long shot"!). Probably about US$15-20 to ship them Stateside. They're nicely bound--plastic spiral from a print shop in Oakland, Calif. But they take up space and space is limited here. Anyone who by some miracle might be interested or know someone who might be, please contact me offlist. Seems like a waste to just trash them . . . Can't export audio files

Had some big plans to revisit DB for songwriting, after flirting with playing real drums. Built a song in 1.4 (Current public release, I think). Export file progress bar just flashes by and produces nothing. Pulled out the beta 1.5 (1G08) and see similar results. Difference is that there is no progress bar. Just nothing. Is there a version that actually produces an audio file? Not trying to be snarky... just really wondering if I should move on or keep trying this song!

Hey folks, Last Friday, I posted an update to the current general release, 1.4.3, which fixes the playback problem under Snow Leopard. If you're not using the 1G series but have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6, you will likely want to grab it. Tonight, I have just posted a new build 1G08 which features a number of notable improvements. Here are the main ones: - Drum kit reconciliation: Doggiebox now remembers assigned mappings when switching kits or pasting between songs. Drum sounds are also now played when clicked, the window title reflects context, and general look- and-feel is improved. - Pattern editor: the playhead can now be moved around freely during playback, using cursor keys or the mouse. - Drum kit list in the inspector: groupings are delineated as they correspond to pattern editor rows, and keyboard shortcuts are shown in tool tips. Personally speaking the first is the most satisfying accomplishment, because it finally completes the intent that I had when designing the reconciliation process almost 7 years ago (...wow). In other words, it's about damn time. The dynamic playhead control is another fundamental and very important improvement which now paves the way to support live drum editing (via keyboard or MIDI) during playback. There were also some UI quirks under Snow Leopard which are resolved. Finally, I would like to remark that usage data so far has indicated that every 1G-series tester has been running 10.5 or 10.6. Given this, and the current state of the art, I am concluding that it may not be worth supporting 10.4 moving forward. Hey all, Just posted a new build; get it through "check for updates..." What's new: - Cosmetic changes to the drum kit list and the song document window. - The floating song inspector now hides itself when a song document is not foremost. - Fixed a crashing issue manifest when unpacking legacy (embedded) sound buffers where sample rate conversion was required (broken in 1G06). - Added some additional statistical counters to the system profiling. - More significant under-the-hood changes. The "statistical counters" mentioned here will help me assess, over the course of the next couple of builds, usage frequency for some activites including: - how you insert drums into patterns (via normal click or command click) - frequency of changing drum kits in a song - reconciling mismatched drums when changing kits or copy/pasting The numbers are reported (anonymously) when you check for updates. I have some ideas regarding functionality and changes to the UI to support new features, but I want to base them on how people are using Doggiebox. 1G06: sample rate freedom

Build 1G06 (14 Aug 2009): This build features a significant re-working of some internals, including audio loading and mixing routines (among other things). Most notably, sample rate conversion is now handled automatically for all sounds, opening up flexibility. Here is what's visibly new: - The 44.1 kHz stereo limitation has been removed from the drum kit editor; now any sound files may be assigned to drums, regardless of sample rate. - An arbitrary sample rate may now be chosen when exporting audio files (and the file size estimate is once again provided). - Changing drum kits in a song now works properly, and in addition, can now be undone without weird side effects. - Fixed a long-standing bug in the pattern editor that could sometimes allow multiple variants of the same instrument (e.g. open and closed hi- hat) to be inserted concurrently. 1G05 is up

Hey all, I have just posted a new build; grab it via the "check for update" function! Here's what's new: - Altered zooming behaviour: by default, zoom now affects the whole song (behaving more like a conventional zoom control); pressing Shift will zoom the current/selected bars only (as in previous builds). - The pattern editor now adjusts its number of rows according to the groups defined in the active drum kit. - Fixed a bug in multi-track exporting that caused silence in all tracks (broken in 1G04). - Fixed a bug that could cause loss of audio data when re-saving a drum kit file created with a very old version of Doggiebox (1.2 or earlier). - Fixed a long-standing cosmetic bug by which the inspector window would creep up the screen by 30 pixels on every launch. - Improved general drawing performance in the pattern editor. Hey all, Grab the latest build: <http://www.doggiebox.com/distribution/ Doggiebox-1G04.zip> This version features a new automatic update-checking mechanism (powered by the popular Sparkle framework). This means that from now on, updating to the latest build should be effortless and without the hassle of having to manually download and expand a zip file each time! On the second launch or so, you will be asked whether to include anonymous system profile information when looking for updates. This is optional, but would be helpful if you chose to do so, since it will help me gauge what sort of platforms are running Doggiebox (e.g. Mac OS versions, hardware, etc.) as well as what preferences options and program features people are using. These statistics will help guide future development decisions. Also in this build is an attempt at improved user experience for playback, with the insertion point and playhead position now unified. Rather than always starting at the top, playback now begins at the insertion point, and the insertion point is set where playback is stopped. I got the beta the other day and just fired it up. I don't know if anyone has reported this, but when you load the demo song and resize the window, the playlist obliterates the play controls in the lower right hand corner. dave
