Hello friends! (Er, is anyone still here?...) A lot of time has ambled by since the last release of Doggiebox back in August 2012. One hundred months, in fact. Yikes! And as you well know, with last year's release of MacOS 10.15 Catalina and its lack of support for 32-bit apps, Doggiebox stopped working altogether on recent Macs. Thanks in part to the pandemic, throughout this spring and fall I've finally been able to spend enough time bringing Doggiebox back up to speed -- to make the necessary and long-overdue changes to make it 64-bit and work with the latest SDKs and current Mac developer tools. (With a legacy codebase dating back to 2002, and many MacOS updates over this span, there was a lot more to this than one might guess.) As such, is with great pleasure that I can announce a shiny new beta! Get it here: http://www.doggiebox.com/distribution/Doggiebox-1J01.zip Notable changes since version 2.0.2: - Now a 64-bit Universal build, supporting MacOS 10.15 and 11.0 on Intel and M1 Macs. (The minimum required system is now MacOS 10.9.) - Numerous internal changes to support modern architecture and updated APIs. - Fixed bug where trying to Revert in the drum kit editor would crash. - Fixed bug where drum kit palette would not be shown until a song document is opened (i.e. absent for a drum kit document). - A new preference setting “Include pre-release (development) versions” will fetch such builds when checking for updates. Known issues in this build: - You may be prompted to locate drum kits when opening existing songs. - Lack of dark mode support and other minor visual anomalies. On account of some of the plumbing changes, there might well be a number of other things that are broken. I would appreciate your feedback in identifying any problems or weirdness so that I can get it fixed. My intent is to clean up the remaining rough edges and issue an official release of Doggiebox 2.1 within the next couple of weeks. My heartfelt thanks to all you loyal Doggiebox enthusiasts for your involvement over all these years. While the Dog may have been snoozing (!), I hope there remains a lot more life in him yet. Doggie Box Beta

Really!! Glad to hear about the update. I had to go back to 2006 for my registration. When that didn’t work, I checked the page and realized there was a 2.0 version. So I found my registration from that (2014). Got everything working! I loaded up some songs that I created in 2006, and DB played them just fine. I’m really glad this has new life. DB is my favorite program when I have to transcribe drums. I HATE transcribing drums, but DB makes the process much easier than using a DAW or some other application. Welcome back puppy dog! Dave

I agree with the staff notation feature. It is unique best I can tell. Its use is a matter of personal preference as far as drawing notes versus tapping out your pattern. I find tapping provides me with a more creative work flow than dropping notes visually. You can draw beats direct into Logic midi editor but I believe it is best to use a pad where you can add some velocity (hard tap vs soft) information that would be more tedious if you were to simply drop notes into the midi editor since drawing notes means they all have the same "feel" until you edit their parameters (velocity/duration). As for changing time signatures I can't say. Logic has so much to offer beyond my current abilities. I do know you can stretch the time. Its called Flex time. Logic Pro X, which obviously needs a modern OS like Sierra or High Sierra,... to run, has a fantastic drummer simulation. I either use the sim to craft my drum parts, or I create parts on a workstation pad and use Logic's drum kit sound patches to program and build my own beats. After quantizing my custom parts I'll either use them alone or build a final drum track that is composed of a combination of these parts and the Logic Drummer simulator track. If working with your own custom pad hits, these can be editing inside the Logic midi editor window to a very high degree. The added benefit to doing it this way is the vast library of custom drum kits that you can choose from to tailor your tones. I'm not knocking Doggiebox, but the affordable options on the market today have evolved so far beyond DB that its difficult to justify sticking with the limitations of DB. Hi, anyone who might still be out there-- I believe I posed a similar question about a year ago, but is anyone in touch with Ben? I think some of us were already hitting the end of the road with Doggiebox (I still got it to work on High Sierra, though YMMV), but I vaguely recall that with Mojave if a certain "x" change wasn't done then various programs were going to fall by the wayside--Doggiebox among them. We come not to mourn Doggiebox but rather to praise it . . . Well, unless something is in the works, damn good run while it lasted and I hope that Ben is doing well, live long and prosper, etc. (Honestly, mostly at this point I'm just wondering if I should finally unsubscribe from this list . . .). dbkits on offer for ns_kit7 (NDK) samples

Anyone out there use the old ns_kit7 samples? These were rebranded as “Natural Drum Kit” (“NDK”) a while back, too, but it’s not clear to me whether they are still available for purchase (though possibly they are still kicking around in torrent-space!). Anyway, I’ve working on a few recordings using Doggiebox drums of late, and was upgrading my dbkits that use ns_kit7 samples. I don’t embed the samples in the dbkits, because they would be too huge, but if anyone out there has the samples, I’d be happy to pass along my dbkits. They include 16 levels of velocity for most of the major drum hit sounds one would want for rock/pop/blues/metal (though fewer levels of velocity for [what I consider] less commonly used drum hit sounds). As long as you samples, you could just point my dbkits at the appropriate directory on your drives when they asked “Hey! Where’s this sample?”, and it should all load up fine. (Without the samples, though, my dbkits would be pretty useless!) Let me know, I’ll send the dbkits (or Dropbox links) along. Zoom In/Zoom Out affects all sections in a dbsong?

I feel like this is behavior I haven’t noticed before, but I was just working on a new piece and, whenever I select a give section (or bar of a section) and try to zoom in/out, the zoom seems to affect _all_ sections in the dbsong, whether or not they are even visible at the moment. This is making me slightly crazy, since I seem to have inserted new bars at different “zoom levels”, so whenever I zoom in or out, ALL the bars/section zoom in and out relative to each other. I can’t get them all at the same “zoom level”. Anyone else encountered this? I feel like it used to be possible to control the zoom of individual bars/sections independently, so I wonder if this is an artifact of some relatively recent OSX update thing ….? Choose kit doesn't load?

I'm having a curious problem in which if I try to open an old dbsong for which I no longer have a dbkit of the expected name, while Doggiebox gives me the option to choose a new dbkit when it opens the Finder-style window for choosing a new kit, nothing appears -- just the little spinning thing down in the lower lefthand corner. There are certainly kits in the folder, it's just not displaying them, or anything else that might be there. You can use the drop-down location choice menu at the top of the menu to move to other folders, but nothing ever appears and the little spinny thing keeps on spinning! Eventually, if you cancel, you get a message telling you you can't open the dbsong because you have to assign a dbkit. The workaround is to make a copy of another kit with the same name that as the expected dbkit in the old dbsong. Groups for Rides and Hats?

Hey all, In dbkits you've put together, which Group do you place ride cymbals in? So far, I've put rides in Group 4, along with high hats for little better reason than I think of using rides in a manner similar to hats. But more recently, in terms of mixing, I have been wondering whether it would be better to put rides in Group 5, where I have placed other cymbals? Would that possibly be more realistic in terms of typical drum mic'ing techniques? (About which I know virtually nothing, being almost entirely a "Doggiebox drummer"! ;)) The question came up because I have been mixing a new recording with DB drums in GarageBand, and I found that for one section where I switched from hats to rides, my rides were pretty low in the mix unless I ramped up the Master Volume controls for the individual ride sample Variants fairly aggressively in the dbkit editor. I haven't tried moving the rides over from Group 4 to Group 5 (wish there was a way to drag and drop Instruments, with all their Variants, between Groups! Or adjust the Master Volume settings for a whole set of Instrument Variants at once!) because I don't want to go through all that work as an experiment :) but I am wondering how this is approached by you others out there ..... Still haven't found a program that as adaptable as Doggiebox. My duo, Les Freres Meduses just got finished writing a little article about it that will be published in Soundboard magazine. Changing time signature for whole song

I have a dbsong which is all in 3/4, but I'd like to change it to 6/8. However, I don't seem to be able to select the whole song and make the change effectively, or even select a whole section of multiple bars and make the change. Or, rather, if I try to do these things, DB seems to change some bars, but not others -- resulting in some curious weirdness. Weird flickering cursor?

Hi all, In the wake of what I presume were some final "pre-Mountain Lion" system updates via Software Update, I find Doggiebox giving me a weird flickering cursor when I mouse-over editable window area in Doggiebox. Well, actually, there are two slightly different versions of the flickering cursor. When I mouse-over the editable drum area, the cursor flickers rapidly between the upright "I"-beam style cursor and the little icon for the selected drum sound; when I mouse-over the horizontal bar that allows one to select the whole measure, the cursor flickers rapidly between the upright "I"-beam style cursor and the pointy-arrow-style cursor. This doesn't seem to diminish my ability to use the application, but it is a bit weird and distracting. Anyone else encounter anything similar? Really, I can't say for sure, of course, that the recent system updates are to blame ... Only that I was using DB a few days ago without a flickering cursor, and now with one, and I have only some software updates at which to point a suspicious finger. Here's a link to a new song on box.com that I just finished. I used sounds from my NS Kit (sounds no longer available it seems). I think the drums came out pretty natural sounding, which is good given that NS used to stand for Natural Studio.

Hey everybody, Doggiebox 2.0.1 is now available, which addresses a number of bugs, memory leaks and stability issues. If you're running 2.0, you can hit "Check for Updates" in the Doggiebox menu to update automatically. Hi everybody, After close to two years of development, Doggiebox 2.0 is almost ready to meet the world at large, and you can get your hands on it first. Doggiebox 2.0 will cost $39, both for new users and as an upgrade (except for those who purchased Doggiebox this year or last). This will be the first paid upgrade since Doggiebox first debuted in 2002. If you're running an earlier 2.0 beta build, you can run a "check for updates" to download the final release. I love the graphics included in the Tama Swingstar kit, but I use all the other kits for different projects, too. I'd appreciate a quick how- to for copying the art from one kit and applying it to the others, if that's possible. Tim Wilson

2.0β!?

So I noticed that DB updated to 2.0β a few days back. No fanfare? Well, it-s working for me so far. :) While I haven't had much time to work on new stuff (baby daughter, etc.), I have been cracking open some old dbsongs to take advantage of the multitrack audio export, and slapping new output into old demos in GarageBand.
