I have a Tascam. It's nice. I use that device with dsp-quattro, logic, and doggie box. Just make sure to get a nice USB cable, such as a belkin or something. OFF: Tascam USB-122, thoughts?

Sorry for being a bit off topic, but ... Mike C., you're using a Tascam US-122 audio interface right? Anyone else? I'm definitely thinking I need to get an audio interface -- recording complete compositions on my Roland VS-1680 is great, but its lack of interface to my computer makes it real hard to quickly sketch out and revise ideas, which I bet I could do pretty easily with an audio interface and GarageBand. The Firewire interfaces I've looked at seem sexy, but perhaps USB would do for me, since I'm unlikely to be recording more than a track or two at a time. I've kinda been hoping Apple's rumoured "Asteroid/Jam Box" thing would materialize, but I'm thinking I'd do better to not wait too long for vapourware :) I've heard good things about the Tascam and Mike C's recordings show it can do the job real well, so perhaps that's the route I'll try .... Hey all, With no further ado, here are the several long-awaited improvements to beat editing now in build 1E9 which is downloadable for your pleasure at <http://www.doggiebox.com/distribution/Doggiebox-1E9.tbz> : * A new floating inspector window replaces the old options sheet for specifying time signature and tempo. Choosing "Tempo/Time Signature..." from the Song menu or "Song Inspector" from the Window menu will make it appear. In the next build, its state should be remembered for automatic showing/hiding. * New behaviour for Cut and Paste: these operations now apply to the instruments laid down within beats only; the physical song structure will remain unaffected. Thanks to everyone who has weighed in on this design/UI issue recently; this reflects what seemed to be the best consensus on how beat-level editing should work. Now it is possible to move instruments and rhythms around, within and across bars, without regard for disrupting the song structure. Currently when you paste, the resultant patterns will be dropped in over top of whatever is currently there (beginning at the insertion point or the start of the selected region if there is one), resulting in an additive effect. In the next build, the behaviour will be changed to overwrite (replace all drums in) the target region by default, but with an additional "Paste Over" command to achieve this additive effect if desired. * New commands Insert Bar, Insert Beat and Delete Beat(s)/Bar(s) for manipulating the song structure. These are accessible from both the Song menu as well as buttons in the inspector. Beats may be added and deleted with respect to the time signature of the bar; e.g. inserting a beat into a 6|8 will turn it into a 7|8. Only whole beats may be deleted; e.g. in a 4|4 bar if you have an eighth-note region selected, the operation will actually take out the full quarter-note beat into which the eighth-note falls. To delete an entire bar, select all of its beats. Adjusting the time signature using the stepper arrows in the inspector will preserve the duration and geometry of the bar. This makes it possible to e.g. overlay a 3-beat rhythm onto a 4|4 bar by temporarily switching the time signature to 3|4. * Zooming now only affects the selected bars (or the one nearest the insertion point). To zoom everything at once, first do a Select All. I think this default behaviour is a little more helpful. * Drag-selection of beats is now possible when the mouse is in either the "i-beam" or "triangle" cursor mode. Holding the option key will select whole bars. Support for discontiguous beat selection (i.e. command-click with "triangle" cursor) has been temporarily disabled. * Fixed a potential crash that could occur after deleting drums from a bar, and various other bug fixes. Great new build Ben. Especially good is the copy paste/over function. This will allow a lot of freedom and creativity for the user. Following on from this, and forgive me for harping back to a previous request of mine, but would it be possible to enlarge this function to allow an ascii pattern to be pasted (ie from the wealth of already tabbed patterns on the net). What I'm thinking is say copying a line from a pattern say --o---o---o---o- and have db place a beat space wherever there is a '-' and a default drum or any other character (X or O or whatever). I see it as being used on a scrap bar to see where each beat falls in relation to others and then transcribing from this onto the bar worked on within DB. It would save a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and tedious counting. Totally different topic: Ben, I wrote out a quick arrangement the other day, saved it, then tried to export it as an AIFF (and messed it up; I may have had the wrong things highlighted in the playlist...). I find that, when I'm going for a simple, straight ahead, live sound, David Holloway's kit fits the bill perfectly. It took me a while to figure out how to work with the boomy kick sound. I found that I need to follow a routine: Export the audio, open in Peak for pre-processing, apply a little eq and limiting to maximize the volume without peaking out, then save. That saved file is what I import into Cubase and build upon. This is my second attempt at vocals. I was pushed into singing by some positive influences by my friends at the Fender Discussion Page. This is the best songI've heard of yours to date, Mike. I'm glad you've been encouraged to take up the vocals - you really have no reason to worry about them at all. Perhaps the parts of your voice you dont like are the parts the rest of us see as character and flavour :-). Although I liked Come Alive and Tillatoba a lot, Flowchart or me is way ahead of these - and not just because I'm a fan of David Holloway's kit either. Its got that fresh 'just recorded straight' sound and the lyrics are way better too. Flowchart-go-kart - inspired! A simple cheery unpretentious song with something to say and bags of personality. I also tend to use DB for quickie demos, but I have also gone all the way to do full-fledged productions with it. And I`m all for being able to export seperate drum parts -- it would really make a huge difference for me. I find that Doggiebox is a great songwriting tool, but the output isn`t always up to par. A little tweaking in ProTools or Logic can make a HUGE difference. Even a carefully mic`d live performance could do with a litte compression or reverb :) I really hope this is a forthcomming feature on DB -- its just such a logical step to take the application to the next level. Disaster!

My Mac has been playing up lately - kernel panics and the coloured beach-ball madly spinning - and every so often it resets to defaults. Today was the worst so far: I'd put Doggiebox as far to the left in Finder, as possible, right underneath Logic and Applications, in the sidebar. When I clicked on it today, I got the message - 'can't open from this alias. Can't find the application, Doggiebox'. I checked prefs and repaired permissions, but when I dragged the icon out of the sidebar, it vanished in a puff of smoke. The whole shooting match has gone. I've downloaded it again and put in my registration code, but I've lost all the kits I'd so painstakingly loaded and, of course, my song files. (I have the audio, where I've used it in Logic, but not as a DB song.) I can't download betas to the Mac - only to this machine(I'm mailing this from my PC), and the version I've just reinstalled isn't allowing me to Input any measures! Machine specs are: PowerMac DP G4 450mhz, 1.256Gb RAM, running Panther OSX.3. I was using beta IE7 of DB Anyone know how this might have happened, so I can prevent it happening again? And how I can get the reinstalled version to work properly?

I have'nt commented in a while... but I've noticed that each new build seems to become more buggy. It seem the old saying... "if it ain't broke... don't fix it" may have more truth to it than people ever realize. If anything... I would say concentrate on better... varying sounding drum kits... and make sure it exports easily into other Mac based music programs (a.i Garageband). Sometimes less is more. But then again... what the hell do I know.

Yet another nskit song

This one approaches sonic satisfaction for me. I've been working hard to understand the subtleties of mixing and mastering. It ain't easy. This song uses the same nskit version 7 that "come alive" used. That first song, "come alive", is soon to be remixed and mastered with Kevin's vocals in place, replacing my own. On the song called "Tillatoba", I sang the backup harmonies. It's OK, I guess. I worked hard to make sure that all the guitarparts meshed together without cancelling each other out or stepping on one another. There's seven of them. My God! I can't describe the feeling of hearing drum tracks that convince even me that there's really a drummer playing. I'm going through the "I hate my voice" thing. The drums are all Doggiebox using nskit v.7. I really like the polish and natural feel of this kit. I need to tone the toms down a little bit, but one thing at a time. This is an example of "pushing the tempo" during the chorus to make the thing feel a little more human. I had posted this before, but at the time it had no vocals and was fairly bare bones. This is an all new version using my new gear (MXL 990 mic, M-Audio monitors, Tascam US-122 interface, Fender Pro Junior... the list goes on. ____________ Mike Carlyle Wilbraham, MA USA

Carl, thanks for taking the time to repost Mikes urls for Come Alive and the kit. I've downloaded both now had a good look at the pattern. I was wondering if you had a version of ns kit 7 with the drums mapped to midi? I seem to remember you doing a bit on the midi side of db some time back. Can you email it to me or post it up somewhere if you have please? Mike, I think this pattern is a good one to learn about db from - its got a lot of interesting techniques in it. I especially like the off beat snare - a nice variation which adds to the realism and interest in the pattern. also you haven't done the lazy thing, which I do all the time, and repeat the same pattern for verse 1 and 2 etc. I'd also forgotten how useful the icons were - as I was scratching my head over icon design and the Ludwig kit. Are these your ns icons Mike? The basic colour indicator work well to reinforce the different drum types and I also like the shape variarion on the ride bell. A great example of push and pull-- Aimee Mann (and the excellent producers she has worked with over the last ten years) often slows down "build" sections, parts that are leading up to the beginning of a chorus or new section. And the instruments don't necessarily all do it the same. (again, great "humanization" even though loops and samples are often being used) Sometimes the drums will only slow down a click or two, if at all, but the guitars and bass (and maybe another perc. item, like tambourine) will drag more-- it feels like hitting a steep short hill on the highway in a big old pickup, then getting to the top and picking up speed again. Another thing to experiment with "humanizing" the drums: add a "slow" snare or toms to your kit. You can even use the same sample as your regular hit, but pull it into an editor and add a very slight extra bit of time to the front of it. This way you can still put the hit in the right place in the sequencer, but still have a bit of push-pull without messing with tempo changes. This works great for the garage-band "Built to Spill" type of lo-fi sound. DC

Once we recognize the need to hear the same drum-type PLAYED using a limited selection of different kinds and levels of attack, we naturally ask next: How and to what extent these gradations can best be DISPLAYED in the pattern-editor, without compromising the usability and economy of our notation system. Apropos, it's tempting to offer a few off-the-cuff observations: 1) Not everything that is played needs to be displayed--at least, not on the same screen view. 2) To notate any kind of music always implies reduction, i.e., leaving out a whole lot of what the performers (or the computer) must then put back into the intended audible result. 3) Only a notation that is simple, logical, and easy to learn will be used by a lot of people to WRITE with. A complete specification of the actual sounds desired is of course needed at some level somewhere along the line, and a few of the more ambitious early computer music languages actually proposed using such a thing as the ideal composing tool of the future. Thank goodness Doggiebox doesn't, and in my view shouldn't. 4) A typical late-19th-century orchestral score goes pretty far in attempting to show (albeit in highly relative terms) almost every significant parameter, employing dozens of different systems of representation in the process, including Italian words, letters, diacritical marks, trills, numbers, and so on. Computers, on the other hand, can switch quickly among alternate representations of the same "score" so easily that we have become used to a multiple-screens approach, allowing each particular, single-purpose view to be simpler to read, less cluttered, and far easier on the eyes. But any kind of readable "score" must still be a far cry from an actual "performance", whether in the realm of live or of digital percussion. 5) The crucial question then becomes: How much can we afford NOT to see? Status report...

Hey all, Since I haven't piped up in here since I posted the last beta a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to show my face and mention a couple of things. :) I have been working on a revised UI for manipulating bars (specifically, a new floating palette with controls for adding/deleting bars and beats, as well as changing time signature and tempo). My hope is this will prove a vast improvement over the current time signature/tempo "sheet" mechanism. I had hoped to post a build by now, but I have been tied down over the last week so there are still a couple of loose ends that need finishing to make it usable. Tomorrow afternoon I am going to be going away for a week (visiting Vancouver...) so no development will occur then. With luck, I'll have a new build up sometime during the week of the 21st. Several of you have made some bug reports and suggestions over the past several days, which I intend to respond to. I am not ignoring them -- but I may not have time to address them until I return. It has been great to see this list so active lately; keep it up, and thanks for your patience. a couple of recent observations

When using the latest beta, I've had some weird corruption during playback when using my nskit. Certain drums seem to not play, or to play very quietly. When exported, the files play normally. It's only DB's playback that seems odd. When building new kits, I've seen a need for a "copy drum" button or function. Sometimes, all the parameters for a series of snare drums, for example, are the same except for the sound file and the name itself. When adding several drums one after the other, it becomes tedious to perform the same clicks over and over. If I could "copy" the selected drum to a new drum, then change only one or two attributes, it could be a real time saver. I made a major upgrade to my studio. Bought a pair of decent monitors, mics, and a Tascam US-122 as an interface. I plan to begin production of an "album" pretty soon with my singer/lyricist collaborator. Stay tuned.
